At the beginning of Oedipus Tyrannos, we can see Oedipus true nature, as he is extremely confident of himself, sure about who he is and where he comes from. One of the most repeated themes in this play is blindness. The word “blindness” is used as a metaphor rather than its literal meaning, it can be found multiple times throughout the play. Sophocles here makes sure that Oedipus suffers because he doesn’t actually know who he really is, and almost avoided finding out the truth, if it wasn’t for his arrogant nature. Despite how ugly the truth may sound, despite Jocasta begging him to forget about it, and continue living without knowing the truth. Oedipus condemns himself by finding out the truth. At the opening scene, when the priests and towns people gather and plead Oedipus to cure them from the plague that’s spreading the city, Oedipus was already one step ahead of them and had already sent his brother in law, Creon to the Pythian halls of Phoebus to learn about how to cure this plague. Later on, when Creon returns with the news, about a murderer living among them that must be banished from the city or be killed in order to cure the plague. Oedipus immediately starts cursing that murderer and asks him to surrender himself, but he didn’t know that he was actually cursing himself. When Oedipus sends after Tiresias in order to learn the truth about the murder of King Laius, and Tiresias refuses to speak fearing the truth, Oedipus immediately starts raging and lets his anger take over his mind.
