I think in the crucible they did interact with supernatural forces. For example on page 12 betty had fainted and she woke up saying Abigail drank blood, but of course Abigail denies all accusations and tells her to shut up, but betty said she drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor's wife. Another example is that on the same page Abigail replies with a threat. Before the threat she remembered them of when they danced and tituba conjured Ruth Putnam's dead sisters. In the beginning Abigail and all the older girls, including betty were running to the forest and when they got in deep enough they stopped. There they ended up with Tituba while she was stirring at big steaming pot, and in the pot there was varieties of animals, including frogs, and …show more content…
Abigail then killed a rooster and drank its blood, after she got fully undressed head to toe, Procter then preaches in and scares all the girls away my opinion is supernatural forces. Another example to backup my opinion is in page 31 they find a vudu doll with a pick in it and before there had been a case of a girl having a stab wound in her stomach area. There they arrested the person who had the accusation towards her and she had to go to jail for a while and probably face a death penalty if those accusation are declared true. In that court if you admit to contacting the devil you get to live and they pray for you and will not put you in jail, so Abigail and all the other girls confess on contacting the devil including tituba, John Hale then asks them all to let the power of God in them and they are screaming pleading for God's help. Also on page 59 Mr. Corey accuses Mr. Thomas Putnam. The accusations being he coldly prompted his daughter to cry witchery upon George Jacobs that was now in jail. Danforth then demands him to show proof about what he claims. Corey then shows a document on how Mr. Thomas Putnam bought land with money he didn't
Fear is the direct result of manipulation. In Act 3 of The Crucible, manipulation is employed many times in order to create an atmosphere of fear and often resulting in the byproduct of fear. During the trial of Abigail Williams, the issue of Proctor’s affair with Abigail arises; in order for Abigail to be defamed, Elizabeth needs to be honest; however, Judge Danforth utilizes tricky wording such as “has John Proctor ever committed the crime of lechery?” to create the feeling of it being John’s trial not Abigail’s(Miller 113). Danforth’s manipulation of how Elizabeth views the trials ends with the prosecution fearing for their lives and reputation. This created atmosphere of fear plays to Abigail's position giving her more power and persuasive
Artur Miller calls his play the crucible. The crucible means a severe test. In the crucible the characters faith is being tested. The town doesn’t show their true faith because they don’t practice what they preach. Due to the town lack of faith when they are tested some fail miserably.
In Act 3, the theme of religion has a different meaning than before. Now, the theme of religion is used in a manipulative way so the people can get what they want. Abigail and the rest of the girls are using Mary Warren because she has turned against them. Abigail pretends Mary is a yellow bird and is taking over their spirits. “Draw back your spirit out of them!” As soon as Abigail and the girls blame Mary for witchcraft Danforth believes them and starts to accuse Mary. “You have seen the Devil, you have made compact with Lucifer, have you not?” Mary Warren responds to the accusations with turning against Proctor. She completely disregards the pact they have made in order to save herself. “I’ll not hang with you! I love God, I love God.” In Act 4, Arthur Miller uses religion to test the characters.
Poor Behavior in “The Crucible” Who causes judgement and has a nasty personality? This is The Crucible where you, the reader, would learn about greed, wrath, and pride of the characters and the impact of poor behavior that every character share throughout The Crucible. People in The Crucible fight for land ownership in Salem. One example, for greed on land, is when Giles Corey states that Thomas Putnam is accusing his neighbors of witchcraft. In other words, Thomas Putnam disputes land boundaries with John Proctor.
Sneakiness and manipulation are tools used to take advantage of others. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible sneakiness and manipulation are used throughout the novel with the characters. In the book Abigail Williams and John Proctor have an affair. Then when everyone in the town finds out that John had an affair with someone other than his wife is in shock because everyone thought that he was a good person. The Crucible symbolizes the transformation of good to evil. One evil manipulative character and her actions represents how the town is torn down. The characters of the crucible are tightly involved with witches and this fact makes the plot dramatic.
In “The Crucible” Arthur Miller made the plot develops through the conflicts by using high tension and climaxes. He ends each of the four acts with a climax. In addition, he allowed the protagonist to develop throughout the acts. “The Crucible” has many internal and external conflicts. The major external conflict is John Proctor trying to save his wife from being hanged by the town officials for supposedly being a witch. The major internal conflict is John trying to decide between saving himself and family from being hanged, or accept the death penalty for false accusations against him. The main conflict sharply differentiated good and evil as John Proctor, the protagonist of the play is faced with the
I’ve chosen to represent the theme Social Pressure in my creative piece; everything I’ve shown in my artwork has been chosen with the idea of conveying the concept of Pressure. I wanted to explore this pressure that the entire village of Salem must have felt during the witch trials where they had to choose to either give in to the devil, or to stand up but have everyone believe you’re against Christianity.
In the Preface of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the writer illustrates how nature and fear control the people. The Puritans viewed nature as an unknown environment where evil resided. For example, The writer states to the reader that nature is described as a “place full of mastery”(167). Nature to the Puritans was scary and dangerous thing. Without knowing a lot of information about nature they think it's a bigger deal than it actually is. Another example of nature as an evil place is when the writer states to the audience that the puritans believed that the “ virgin forest was the Devil’s last preserve”(167). The forest to most people is the last place you would think about going. However unless you thought you had a connection to the
In the play, The Crucible, weakness is seen as an advantage to some. rev. Hail shows courage coming into salem and, truth shows that the court is corrupt in the town of salem. Weakness, courage and truth all have an impact on the characters and the outcome of events throughout the play.
In Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, Arthur intrigues audience time and time again with the historical context, social implications, and the Salem, Massachusetts Witchcraft Trials of 1962. Most members in Salem feel the need to prove their authority in ways such as accusing those who have done nothing or hanging them without proving their innocence first. The thing is authority is not made up by an authority figure, but by society. Miller’s The Crucible, demonstrates how people misuse their authority for cruel purposes through a fascinating plot, well-crafted characters, and well-set theme. During the hysteria of witchcraft trials in Salem, there were multiple figures of authority or per say the community who abused their power, Reverend Hale, Abigail Williams, Reverend Parris and Judge Danforth.
The McCarthy hearings (The Red Scare) in the 1950’s with the political issues that were happening during those years could be depicted as the 1692/93 Salem Witch Trials. Accusing people of being communists is the same as accusing people of being witches. Arthur Miller, the author of the play,The Crucible, that was based on the Salem Witch Trials is a good example of a morality play. In 1692, there were accusations against innocent people in the town of Salem. In The Crucible, a group of teens accuse others of witchcraft even though, they are trying to cover up their mistakes that had been caused. After John Proctor had an affair with Abigail Williams this had opened a full can of worms throughout Salem. The Crucible displays characterization and bold symbolism and is represented in good and evil morals during the Salem Witch Trials.
In the Crucible written by Arthur Miller, he essentially talks about “courage, weakness, and truth.” Arthur Miller gives multiple scenarios when different characters have their time to shine and take the reader's attention. They’re multiple examples to prove this statement. For example would be when Thomas Putman stated, “he felt that his own name and the honor of his family had been smirched by the village, and he meant to right matters however he could.” In this specific quote he is very courageous to say something like this and take the law into his own hands.
In the play, The Crucible, one of the most important motifs are who has power, how they got that power, how they use that power, and to what ends they will use the power. Throughout the play, different characters obtain such power, but the ways in which the power is used are distinct. For example, some characters have a great deal of control and that affects how those specific people behave and treat others in the play. On the other hand, some are powerless and this has an important factor in the decisions these people make throughout the course of the play. Authority is arguably the most significant component throughout the duration of the play, and there were two sides of the scale: powerful people and powerless people.
“Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” Abigail Williams has said this quote during Act I of The Crucible to the other girls caught dancing in the woods. Abigail is a seventeen year old who has taken charge of the Salem Witch Trials. Abigail and I portray common traits such as manipulating others, self-centered personalities, and leading many girls.
In Act 1, the dramatic tension is started when Hale finds out about how Abigail and the girls were dancing in the forest and begins to interrogate her. This puts pressure on her and she tries to minimize the situation which can be inferred in the line "Why a very little frog jumped" (35). She uses the phrase "very little" which makes the "movement" insignificant. Eventually, the pressure gets to Abigail and she blames Tituba which immediately reduces the pressure on her and starts the process of accusation. It also increases the tension because a part of the story has unravelled to Hale- who is currently the most powerful person in the room. The blame can be evidenced in the quote "I never called him! Tituba, Tituba-"( 35). She chose to blame
