What characters best exemplify true love?
In the book “The Count of Monte Cristo”, the characters that show true love are Maximilien, Valentine, Mercedes, and Dantes. Although Mercedes’ and Dantes’ love for each other was great, they ended up getting separated because of Dantes going to jail. This makes Valentine and Maximilien best represent the idea of true love. This is because throughout the story, the characters have always tried to be together and they have always loved each other. When Maximilien finds out that Valentine is dead, he sees no point in living anymore and attempts to commit suicide. In the last chapter, when Maximilien and Valentine are finally reunited

List 3 or more examples.
The author uses a lot of suspense throughout the story. Some examples of this are Dantes being thrown off a cliff while trying to escape from prison, putting Valentine in risk of being poisoned, and Dantes being thrown to prison. When Dantes was trying to escape the prison, he met his friend Abbe who later suffered from an attack and was left paralyzed. After suffering another attack, he was declared dead. Dantes planned to use the opportunity and put himself in the body bag, then escaping by digging himself out of his grave. The author then creates suspense because he isn't buried. He is instead thrown off a cliff into the ocean while the reader doesn't know if he will survive or not.”With the last word he felt himself flung into space … there was a tremendous splash and he plunged like an arrow into the icy sea.”(79)The next example is Valentine getting poisoned. Valentine was being poisoned by her stepmother because she wanted her son to get an errance. After the Count promises that nothing will happen to her, the reader is left hoping that the Count will keep his word and protect her from dying. Maximilien would also be hoping that she would survive for she was the love of her life. Lastly, the most suspense created in the story is what creates the whole plot. This is Dantes getting arrested. The reader wanted to know whether he would escape, survive, die, or get revenge on those who accused him.

Danglars, who is mad because Dantes got promoted to be the captain of the ship is punished by being kidnapped and starved having to pay a large amount of money for food. He takes most of his money and leaves him in ruins. He punished Fernand by revealing the truth of what had happened after joining the military. He had betrayed Haydee's father and sold her into slavery. The Count revealed this information to his family, causing them to leave. Being left alone, Fernand with his ruined reputation and no family decides to commit suicide. Caderousse was punished by being killed by Dantes when he tried to break into Dante's’ house. He was dressed as Abbe and when he was close to dying, he revealed his identity. Monsieur de Villefort was punished by Dantes by giving his wife the poison to kill his mother and father. Then, she used on herself and his son because they were being accused of a crime. He was left alone and knowing that he had a son with another woman. Caderousse, Fernand, and Danglars planned how they would accuse him of being a bonapartist and Monsieur decided to create a lie based on a letter that Dantes had that was to be delivered to someone of the bonapartist party. This would be considered treason and since his father was part of the bonapartist party, he tried to show that he was loyal and ultimately invented a
Suspense is defined as the author withholding information or when the unexpected happens, leaving you guessing and wanting more. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, he has inserted much suspense in this short (long) story, for the reason that it makes the reader want to know more and having to mindset of excitement or surprise. Another reason he added many suspense is so that it wouldn’t be so blunt, it wouldn’t just tell us what happened it would give us details and how he got or how he did that and more.
W.W. Jacobs creates suspense using a mysterious monkey’s paw. Ricky Lewis Jr. attempted to create similar suspense using different techniques. As told in the story in the book,”He took the paw, and dangling it between his forefinger and thumb, suddenly threw it upon the fire. White, with a slight cry, stooped down and snatched it off. ”Better let it burn,” said the soldier solemnly. “If you don’t want it, Morris,” said the other, “give it to me.”.”I won’t said his friend doggedly.”I threw it on the fire. If you keep it, don’t blame me for what if happens. Pitch it on the fire like a sensible man.”(Jacobs,108) Therefore, W.W. Jacobs fundamentally builds suspense with the dialogue between Morris, who owned the paw initially, and Mr. White, who was interested and curious on what the paw had to offer.
Edmond Dantes was a 19 year old man who became captain of a ship name the Pharaon. He was much loved by everyone. He is pretty gullible and becomes vengeful when the one guy he considered his friend betrayed him the other two who he was not to fond of ruined his life. He was a respectable young man who showed that numerous times like when he had to leave Morrel while he was talking to him; he said “I beg you excuse me, Monsieur Morrel (Dumas 5). He was to be betrothed to a girl named Mercedes who he’d loved very much but he loved his father most of all. He felt bad when he found out his father was broke from paying his debt causing him to fall to his knees and said “may God forgive me” (Dumas 9). Dantès is a pretty unique character who
Suspense is an important trait in many works of fiction. In David Montrose’s novel The Crime on Cote Des Neiges, he uses narration, digression and secondary characters to create suspense throughout the novel.
Every good story has some part where it gets suspenseful. In the stories, “The Most Dangerous Game,” “Liberty,” and “Harrison Bergeron” there were situations of intense suspense. In “The Most Dangerous Game,” an example of suspense is when Rainsford was noticed by Zaroff while he was laying on the branch. “The general’s eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring. But the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay; a smile spread over his brown face.” That was a suspenseful situation because Zaroff easily found Rainsford, and just smiled before leaving him unharmed. In “Liberty” an example of suspense is when the narrator was taking Liberty to her cage, and strange men tried stealing Liberty and kidnapping the narrator. “Two strange men in dark glasses were crouched behind the hedge. The fat one had seized Liberty by the collar and was pulling so hard on it that poor Liberty was almost standing on his hind legs.” That was a suspenseful situation because two strangers tried kidnapping the narrator it wouldn’t have ended so well, because they could have used her to scare her family into
In both the excerpts "Jams" and "Swimming with Nightmares" by Peter Benchley, the author creates suspense in many ways. The author utilizes descriptive words, character's choices, and dangerous situations for creating suspense.
In this quote, Villefort finds out that Dante’s is about to get married and starts to actually feel sorry for the man because he himself was also about to get married. I chose this quote because I think it symbolizes that even though Villefort is mainly an antagonist he still has good aspects to him as well.
By using descriptive words and phrases to help us imagine the characters and setting the readers are drawn further into the suspense. Beginning with the descriptions of the carnival, usually a joyous time, it is not so joyous but mostly dark with the vision of “[dusk] one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival
In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe tell of a man going to great extents to get revenge. Montresor holds a grudge against Fortunato because he has insulted him several times causing pain inside him to form and builds up day by day. Fortunato has a talent of tasting wine but needs to find a way not to express his feelings that much. Throughout the story, Edgar Allan Poe creates events in which he builds suspense. The author keeps his readers on their feel by having a surprise at every corner. Edgar Allan Poe demonstrates in “The Cask of Amontillado” how he uses the conflict to show the build of suspense, change of mood of the reader, develop the theme, reflect a change in the character/characters.
Mahatma Ghandi once said “Love is the strongest force the world possesses and yet it is the humblest imaginable.” Love is a very strong theme in the book The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. Many of the characters, including Mercedes, Haydee, Valentine, and Edmond experienced some form of true love. Whether it was love between family, friends, or partners, many of the characters in The Count of Monte Cristo experienced love. Love is different to each person, love fuels many of the characters actions, and love isn’t something that can be erased through events.
The first way the author creates suspense in the story is by foreshadowing. When Captain Torres walked into the barber’s shop, the barber, “Started to shake,” (Tellez 1) indicating that the barber felt instant fear, when his enemy approached. This foreshadows that the barber knows the man and that he will be deciding to kill him or not. Foreshadowing creates suspense because it is a clue given to the reader. It is the reader’s job to guess what is going to happen in the story and that is what makes it interesting. Without foreshadowing the reader won’t be able to prepare what is going to happen next. Another scene where the foreshadowing technique is used was when the barber came up with his reasons to not kill Captain Torres. The barber contemplated in his mind, “Don’t want to stain myself with blood. Just lather, and nothing else,” (Tellez 2) which foreshadows that the barber is not going to commit murder.
Alexandre Dumas shows us through characters and plot just how powerful love can be. It can take the place of hatred and anger. It can place happiness in the hearts of the most morose. Love is the most powerful thing in the universe, whether it be familial, romantic, or platonic. It was like this in 1844, when the novel was published, and it is still like this in 2017. One moral in The Count of Monte Cristo is that love is the strongest force in the world because it can take the place of hatred and
From the introduction of Edmond Dantès to the final revenge of Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas uses irony in many parts of the novel to provide readers a better understanding of the character’s personality and actions. Dumas uses dramatic irony in situations when the different personas of Edmond Dantes interact with others in the novel, who don’t know that the personas are all Edmond Dantes. Situational irony takes effect when actions of various characters do not match their expected actions. Most verbal irony occurs at the same time as most dramatic irony since he lies about his fake names when he is in his other personas. Without irony being used, the readers wouldn’t be able to connect ideas occurring in the novel with the characters.
A good mystery story needs a hero, a villan and an out of the ordinary storyline. In my opinion the story should have a realistic drama and the right setting, something to drastic will not allow the reader to relate to the story. A narrator may make the story more personal and the reader can really get inside the story to know what the character is feeling and fears, increasing tension. There also should be a range of suspects; some of these characters can be used as red herrings, which can mislead the reader, adding to the shock at the end of the story. In ‘The speckled band’ the suspects are the gypsies, the exotic animals and Dr Roylott, there are some obvious and some not,
Suspense is when the author makes the reader, or audience excited or scared for what might happen in the story, or even what will happen to the character next in the story. Suspense might even be something you see or hear that will make you have questions about what will happen next. If there is a cliffhanger at the end of a story, it will leave you with questions wondering what will happen to the characters next. The mood, tone, setting, emotions of character, sound and sight might affect how the story is suspenseful. We all enjoy watching suspenseful movies and reading stories, because they are exciting. It leaves us with questions that the author won't have the answers to in the end, so the author gives us as the audience, the chance to make up their own ending to the story or movie. The author will give you clues throughout the story, to help you fill in questions you might have in the end. This makes it more exciting for the reader and the audience because we get to engage with the characters in the book or movie. The tv series, Stranger Things, is about 4 kids who have to fight off monsters in a little town in Indiana. This TV show is a great example of suspense, and it shows it effectively because, of Foreshadowing, Dilemma, and Dramatic Irony presented throughout the show. With just using those four examples, Stranger Things is a great example of suspense.
