There are six names to describe the various toxic people a person may come across: The Steamroller, The Zipper Lip, The Backstabber, The Know-It-All, The Needy Weenie, and The Whine/Cheeser. Steamrollers are intimidating and get control by putting others down. The Zipper lip person rarely give good eye contact companied with poor posture, single word answers, and closed body language. Backstabbers take credit for others work, spread damaging rumors, and try to break down existing friendships. The Know-It-All is arrogant, using their skills experience as a sledgehammer to make it difficult for others to challenge or question their ability. Identify your toxic type by using the book and create habits built on what you already know: verbiage, intent, and posture. Think of the words or actions that send you into an orbit. Then try to eliminate such words and instead you use other similar words with a positive connotation. Always give others a reason for listening to you. Choose words that benefit them. Approach toxic situations with positive intent and eliminate the focus of getting them before they get you. Keep a positive attitude about what you are capable of saying. Eliminate emotional posturing and closed body language. Here are ten steps to deal with toxic behavior: 1. Identify the Toxic Person’s behavior. 2. Understand the outcome you want with the relationship. 3. Decide how you want to be perceived by the Toxic Person. 4. Plan your response to your Toxic Person. 5. Practice your approach. 6. Choose the appropriate time and environment. 7. Follow up with the person if appropriate. 8. Evaluate the meeting by yourself. 9. Determine what you can improve the next time you encounter this kind of Toxic Person. 10. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done.
