Zeus can be compared to Superman in the sense that he is powerful, he protects the weak, and punishes the wicked. He is a human-like god in a sense he commits adultery, and is often to his wife Hera. The real life ideals represented by Zeus’s role, is one of a just and powerful character that gets justice against those that are bad and by protecting the good and weak. For Zeus being the god over all the Olympian gods it is quite easy to be powerful and just. In real life instance the justice system is the one to execute injustice through the law, the police and court system. This enables the victims that a sense of justice has been served.
Zeus was the first of the Gods and a very iconic figure. He is known as the “Father of Gods and men”, he is the god of the sky who controls lightning (often using it as a weapon) and thunder. Zeus is king of Mount Olympus, where the Greek gods live. With Hades and Poseidon, Zeus split the rule of the world with his brothers, and became king of Olympus .He took an interest in the actions of mortals. He watched over them with care, and fairness, but punishing if they deserved it.
The mythological character and God, Zeus, is portrayed in many ways, by many different people. Hesiod describes Zeus as being relentless in his fury. When he gets mad he unleashes all of his power. If his brother Hades wasn’t in charge of the Underworld, he’d make all of Hell break loose. For example, in Hesiod’s Theogony, which is about when Zeus defeated his father, Cronus, he says, “Then Zeus did not hold back any longer, but now immediately his heart was filled with strength and he showed clearly all his force.” (Morford and Lenardon 85) He tends to treat others, mortals and immortals, very unfairly. Two mortals could do the same exact type of sacrilege towards him, and depending on how he felt that day, he would take two very different approaches to how he would treat them. He also doesn’t take any threats towards him very lightly at all. If anyone ever threatens him, he normally punishes them very severely, if he doesn’t destroy them completely. Hesiod’s approach to Zeus’ behavior is overdramatic, and makes it seem more extreme than it probably would’ve been.
Zeus was not faithful; Hera had a belligerence toward Zeus. She started a revolt against him and planned to kill him. She thought that she could strap him under a tree with some ropes and whip him. It seemed like the plan would work but it only became total chaos. Zeus came back, and punished Hera in a portentous way by hanging her and whipping her. He made her promise not to harm him again.
“The supreme deity of Greek mythology has his lusty, tempestuous story recast in engaging fashion by Stone”(ProQuest). Zeus was thought of as the father of gods and men. While he did not make them, he protected them, and therefore was considered a father to them. He ruled over the sky and air, and controlled everything that happened in his domains from his throne on Mount Olympus. To gain his throne, he overthrew his father, Cronos, with the help of his siblings, and then dividing up the realms between him and his two elder brothers. Zeus became lord of the sky and rain, Poseidon took the title lord of the sea, and Hades became ruler of the underworld. He then banished his father to the shadowy Tartarus in the underworld. Zeus was the most
Zeus, his name is synonymous with Greek mythology and religion. God of the weather and sky he used his powers of wind, lightning, and thunder to uphold the law and keep order. He ruled Mount Olympus as well as the pantheon of gods who lived there. Watching over mankind he would punish those who defied him and help those who were wronged. However, Zeus did have his flaws. His quick tempered nature combined with his lust for women made him relatable to the common man. From his coming to power until the beginning of Christianity, this complex god would have no equal.
I chose to write about Zeus for my independent project. By the time my paper is written and finished, I can only hope to have discovered more and more information about him than at the beginning of this essay. Some things I do want to remember and learn about him are what made him so great, is he the Greek God’s leader, and what did he accomplish? When somebody speaks about Greek mythology, it seems as though everyone wants to talk about Zeus. Another thing that I hear very often when Zeus is mentioned is the fact that he controls/carries the lightning bolt. That is Zeus’s symbol. I have for a long while been itching to take in more about him yet never thought to consider his history until today.
Another example of Zeus’ predisposition for not having control over his more human needs is the fact that Aphrodite has power over him. Aphrodite, the very powerful goddess of love and lust, flaunts about her alleged power over Zeus. This, however, angered Zeus and led to a very stern punishment for Aphrodite. Zeus was growing tired of Aphrodite’s arrogance, so he punished her by making her fall in love with a mortal named Anchises.
Hera Juno is a jealous and angry goddess while dealing with Zeus and his many mistresses. Even though Zeus and Hera are both married, Zeus falls in love with many other women. Her jealousy guides her to "punishing the many women Zeus falls in love [with]... [no matter] how innocent [the women are]" (Hamilton, Mythology,27). Hera's jealousy guides her to disempower women because of her husband , who is culpable, lies with them. Hera does not attempt to fix her marriage at all. Her anger gets the best of her even if the women "yielded only because he coerced or tricked them" (Hamilton,27). She does not care if Zeus, himself, tricks the women; She only sees it as their fault. Hera simply lets Zeus get away with whatever he wants.
Zeus was god of the sky ruler of the Olympian Gods. Zeus overthrows his father, Cronus and then drew lots with his brothers Poseidon and Hades, in order to decide who would succeed their father on the throne. Zeus succeeded in the winning of the draw and became the superior ruler of the gods, as well as lord of the sky and rain. He is a powerful God and his symbols reinforced this sense of power. His symbols were the Thunderbolt, Eagle, Bull, and the Oak Tree. His weapon was a thunderbolt which he launched at those who made him angered or disobeyed him, especially liars and oathbreakers. He was married to Hera but was infamous for his many affairs.
I feel it is necessary to distinctly define the different gods and goddesses. As mentioned in class, while most gods and goddesses might hint at the virtue of xenia, Zeus is the main god who truly enforces it. Poseidon is furious with Odysseus; therefore, the moment he sees anyone helping Odysseus, he wants to punish them. This fact cannot be ignored, even if the ones who help Odysseus are Poseidon's own people, the Phaiakians. As for Zeus permitting Poseidon's act, I would assume that Zeus did not want to deal with a whiny god, so he simply let Poseidon have his
To begin, Zeus was seen as one of the major gods, if not the most supreme god of his time. This could have affected the Greeks interpretations of his actions. Zeus was seen as the “glorified image not only of husband
One of the most important gods in Greek mythology is Zeus. Zeus was a lover he had a lot of kids everywhere. He was also a dangerous lover for mortal maiden and a completely inaclaba in his use of the terrible thunderbolt (Hamilton 44). Zeus was always helped by his grandmother. When Zeus was grow he forced his father with the help of his grandmother the earth to disgrace it along with five earlier children, and it was set at Delphi where eves a great traveller pausaices by reports that he saw it around 180 A.B (Hamition 67). Zeus had supreme power over everything after that. Zeus has supreme power over not only over each private
From the dawn of time, many ancient Greeks turned to Gods and Goddesses for help and good fortune when going into battle, harvesting crop and many other tasks of everyday life. Typically, many turned to Zeus, the God of Gods and man, for help and protection, and was loved and worshiped by all, being praised for victories over enemies and thanked for good fortune and harvest. Although he may seem high and mighty, he was anything but, and is famously known for his numerous affairs and many infidelities of which Hera became enraged and jealous about and for good reason of her own. This goes to show, that even those we consider the greatest can fall to the depths of destruction as he deceives those around him into getting what he wants. Not only did he deceive those around him, but he tricked Hera, Europa, as well as Danae into believing he was something he was not.
Zeus was considered to be the leader of the Olympian gods of Mount Olympus. He was the god of the sky and thunder. He had many powers but the most significant was the power to wield lightning bolts. He could hurl lightning bolts at people who defied him or other gods who he was displeased with. He was the youngest child of Cronus and Rhea and was planned to get eaten by Cronus like all of his brothers and sisters before him, but he was hidden from Cronus at Mount Dicte. He then went on to overthrow Cronus and control the gods. He had twenty-four children and some of them were powerful gods. He also had some half god children like Hercules. He lives on the top of Mount Olympus with Hera, his wife.
