Exercise and pharmaceuticals are both treatment methods for chronic conditions however, each of these methods have their benefits and drawbacks. Both are beneficial in certain conditions though some conditions can be prevented with the use of physical activity. Many of us have become accustomed to the availability of a pill to help us whether we are sick or in pain. We look to something to help us. However, many of us forget about the impact that basic exercise has on us and the benefits that accompany it. An advantage to exercise is that it is a low cost intervention in that you do not need expensive equipment or a gym membership to take part in physical activity. You can find opportunities for exercise in all areas of life whether it …show more content…
It also plays a role in reducing the risk of developing cancer, diabetes and can help manage sugar levels in diabetics (Lovett, n.d.). It also plays a role in the immune system as it increases the number of white blood cells thus temporarily boosting the immune system (Lovett, n.d). The disadvantage of exercise is for the people who do not have the time or the means to exercise. By this I mean, that they may not have a capable body in terms of wellness and health to be able to take part in exercise. They may be hindered by illness, disease or disability. In terms of timing, some people just do not have enough time in their day to dedicate to exercise. They may have a highly demanding job and a busy home life where they do not have time to take for themselves and their health. In today’s society where everyone is accustomed to the immediacy of everything due to technology, we look for the most convenient thing that requires minimal effort. Hence why pharmaceuticals are so popular in terms of aiding illness. The advantages to pharmaceuticals are that they are convenient, usually only a pill a couple of times a day and that they are easy and require no work from the patient, make them favourable. Along with this, there is a much faster time in which improvements are seen. If you compare exercise to this, it takes a couple of weeks for improvements in terms of weight and muscle tone to be observed by the patient let alone
Exercise in general has been known to reep many benefits in health of the body, for example the seven components of fitness as mentioned in ‘ABC of sports and exercise medicine, third edition by Sir Roger Bannister’. (Edited by Gregory P Whyte)
According to Healthwise, in an article titled, Why Is Exercise Important? “Our bodies were meant to move - they actually crave exercise. Regular exercise is necessary for physical fitness and good health.” (Healthwise, 2010).
Introduction: Exercise is a physical activity or particular movement that is used in order to become healthier and stronger. (1) Exercise, in all of its forms, has various effects on the different systems in the human body. One of the main benefits is cardiovascular health, including circulation and heart health. Exercise uses a lot of energy, which the cells derive from oxidising glucose. Meaning that the heart has to work harder to pump more blood throughout the body and the heart has to beat faster in order to achieve a high effort. (2) The heart benefits from exercise include being able to pump more blood through the body and continue working at a higher level with less strain. (3)
It is widely acknowledged that exercise is beneficial, and that regular exercise has many valuable results. In February 2014 the Mayo Clinic joined this bandwagon of popular press, publishing an
Exercising can be seen in a few different ways. One way of looking at it is it can be seen as a way of maintaining good health and having a strong body so that you can decrease the risk of getting any health related diseases. It could also be looked at as a way of looking good for other people. With the growing interest and popularity in social media, people are becoming more and more obsessed with their bodies and say they want to look like that model, athlete and so on. Some people will exercise to look good for other people and not themselves.

Physical activity has been proven to have phenomenal benefits on the human body and is an important part of a balanced lifestyle. Statistics have shown that regular exercise can prevent illness and lower one’s likelihood of being diagnosed with a series of diseases significantly. It has been ‘medically proven’ that regular exercise can reduce a subject’s chance of being diagnosed with coronary heart disease or stroke by 35%, type two diabetes by 50%, colon cancer by 50%, breast cancer by 20%, early death by 30%, osteoarthritis by 83% and a number of other life threatening illnesses. Regular exercise can improve a person’s overall wellbeing and immunity to common illnesses. During physical activity, a person’s heart rate can increase significantly and allow more oxygenated blood to be supplied to muscles. A person’s breathing rate can increase during exercise and supply more oxygen to the lungs. The increased blood flow during exercise allows the brain to function better. Exercise has many benefits to the human body and is a major factor of disease
Exercise, or physical activity helps your body in many ways. For example, exercise helps control the weight of a human. It helps prevent people gaining unwanted weight and helps people who have unwanted weight to lose it. (mayoclinic.com) When we eat, we are taking in calories, and then when we exercise we burn off
Exercise is one of the most important factors in a persons’ life. Physical activity, or the lack of it, can result in a person having a healthy life or cause them to have diabetes. The benefits of exercise are countless. The positive health results, the improvement in attitude, even better academic performance are all factors which make not exercising inexcusable.
People diet and exercise for different reasons, but what many do not realize is that too much exercise can be detrimental to our health. Along with dieting, many people will find themselves in a vicious cycle and develop an addiction to dieting an exercising. If we look back, exercise addiction was looked at as a positive thing according to Glasser (1976). Contrary to what he believed, Morgan (1979) looked at symptoms of addiction, withdraw symptoms, social reactions, and other negative effects. Morgan (1979) viewed exercise as a negative addiction. Even though it does not seem this way too many due to the positive light exercise has been under because of media and society, if it is preventing us from living our lives, then it could be an addiction or dependence issue. Failure to use or exercise the voluntary muscles makes them weak and flabby. Weakening of those organs and systems that are formed from involuntary muscles is the result of failure to exercise. Muscles act like furnaces when one begins to exercise. They contract, or shorten, by burning one’s food fuel which uses up oxygen, and the energy produces wastes and gives off heat. A person who exercises receives some benefits. Exercise tones and strengthens every organ and system of one’s body. It helps relax tensions, making the sleep sounder. It strengthens one’s self-control, increases one’s mental efficiency, and enhances one’s feeling of well-being. It also boosts insulin sensitivity. Insulin is a hormone that allows blood sugar to enter the body’s cells, where it’s stored or used as fuel. However, as a person ages or when he/she puts on weight, his/her bodies don’t respond as well to insulin and can become insensitive, or resistant, to the hormone. Insulin resistance increases the risk of heart disease and, if blood sugar levels keep rising, type 2 diabetes. A combination exercise and diet regimen may reduce frailty and increase physical performance for elderly adults who suffer from obesity, according to a study. To top things off, exercise seems to help not only the body but also the brain. In fact, an exercise can reduce the symptoms of depression, and it changes the brain in ways similar to antidepressant medications. In old age,
Looking at the information presented there is far more support to show exercise is more beneficial than it is detrimental to an individual’s health. The negative implications could become apparent when an individual does not fully understand the way the body reacts or responds to exercise.
The benefits of physical exercise in humans far outweighs the harmful effects associated with exercise. A prescription of physical activity has been known to delay the onset or prevention of many chronic diseases. An improvement in heart function, lower blood pressure and improve functional capacity is noticed after just a few weeks of exercising. Physical activity will also result in an increase of lean muscle mass, promote weight maintenance, increased flexibility, and a generally stronger more fit individual. Conversely, exercise when preformed strenuously or obsessively can counteract such positive effects, bringing up some issues like oxidative stresses, injuries, and
Adding exercises into one’s daily routines can change their whole lifestyle. Many people look at exercise as being something just for people who want to lose weight or to become muscle bound, but there are a great deal of benefits that can be received from exercising regularly. Of course gaining muscle and losing fat are the two most popular reasons that usually attract people to the gym, but they make up a small part of the potential benefits that can be achieved with exercise. There are several ways in which I have benefited in my life from exercising regularly, besides just making me bigger and stronger. It has made me become more organized, helped me make better decisions, and motivated me to take on new challenges in life.
The philosopher Plato (427-347 BC) said: “Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it” (Vina, Sanchis‐Gomar, Martinez‐Bello, & Gomez‐Cabrera, 2012, p. 2). Exercise has several benefits; it enhances the overall health of a person. It is important for strengthening the muscles, building bones, and maintaining a healthy weight. Besides, humans are not becoming any younger each day. Moreover, scientists and researchers discover new diseases, illnesses and disorders that could potentially be fatal for a human’s body, which can lead to death. Thus, the purpose of this essay is to analyze the effects of exercise and focus on three factors: pain, ability to learn, and chronic medical condition. People need to maintain a healthy body because as time goes by the body starts to deteriorate, and it loses its original form. However, age should not be a hindrance if a person wants to change his/her lifestyle to stay healthy. Evidence has shown that exercise is beneficial for improving pain, enhances the ability to learn, and has a long-term benefit in preventing chronic medical conditions. This paper will discuss the impact of exercise on improving pain, the effects of exercise in relation to the ability to learn, and exploring the interrelationship of exercise and chronic medical conditions.
