Exercise For College Students
College life is a time full of fun, friends, activities, classes, and homework. All of these activities however, add up to a busy life style. Being busy is not in itself harmful but when the busyness becomes so great that it turns into stress, problems start to arise. The formation of stress leads to many unhealthy trends, such as lack of sleep, loss of immunity to disease, and a change in personality traits. How then can stress in the busy lives of college students be reduced? The answer is a simple one that has long been known; exercise relieves stress. Colleges across the country need to implement a program of required exercise classes to promote the well being of students.

Those against mandatory exercise say that if students feel it is important to exercise they will create a program of physical activity on their own and it does not need to be a part of the school. The problem with this theory is that the majority of people would stop the program if left on their own without any sort of accountability. For example, a study was done on several different exercise plans to see what results would happen over time. First the theoretical approach of self-monitoring was used. This program left individuals to attend exercise sessions on their own without any intervention from others. The overall observation was that interest in attending and exercising was lost after about four weeks. Next the approach of stages of change was used. This program used four different groups. One group received weekly calls with structured inquiry to see how and when the subjects were personally exercising. The second group received weekly calls with general inquiries about their exercise habits. The third group received a call every three weeks with general inquiries of exercise, and the last group received calls every three weeks with structured inquiries. The results were, that 63% of the subjects who were called more frequently were regularly exercising as opposed to only the 22% exercising success rate of those that were called less frequently. Nowadays people just sit down, order everything online and try to not move as much as possible, or that how I was until my freshman year at Arizona State University. I was not active at all and had self-esteem issues and weighted 220 pounds, and my major is computer science (CS) which mean, I get to sit down for hours typing codes and study for all different sorts of hard classes and that increased my anxiety and stress. Then, I started working out and my life changed, I lost 60 pounds, felt happy about myself and how I look, all the stress I had from classes which anyone who takes calculus, computer classes know how hard they can be, it just decreased and I could feel like everything is going to be fine at the end, just have to try harder and that is it. Thesis: It’s hard being a student and working at the same time, and find energy for both. I will show you why starting an exercise program can boost your energy and your mental health.
First of all, students do not have much knowledge about the different fitness components; they do not understand the relation between the fitness components and health. If students acquire the background knowledge about fitness, it could improve the class engagement and motivation, and increase the independent drive to exercise. Second barrier to students’ achievement is the lack of motivation to be active, and even more difficult, to specific fitness activities, such as sit-ups and push-ups. In today’s society, students spend more time sitting in front a screen and less time moving. Parent and school today have more responsibility making sure the children get enough physical activity. According to the New York Times (2016), “early school physical education (PE) programs can make a significant difference, and the earlier these routines are learned the more likely they will be carried forth into a healthy adulthood”. Another barrier that prevents students’ success is the loss of instructional time due to discipline problems. The classes are too big, with many diverse students with individual problems, which are difficult to address when these issues are from very different backgrounds. Numerous teens go off to college not knowing basic life skills that become increasingly helpful when you're off on your own. Figuring things out on your own isn’t always an awful thing, but if you had someone to teach you about life and how to manage your way through it, it would be so helpful. One not so great thing about figuring information out on your own is that you could end up making some costly mistakes. One of the best times to learn life skills such as managing money, cooking, raising a child, first aid, relationship and communication skills, and how to get a job is right before a teen goes off to college. There is a great deal of teens who go off to college and will be living on their own for the first time, if we taught life skill type classes in high school they would be more prepared to go off on their own.

Hagerstown Community College (HCC) is a public, not for profit, two-year college located in Washington County Maryland. HCC is one of the first colleges in Maryland that started by offering mostly evening classes. Today, the campus offers over 100 programs of study on its 319-acre campus consisting of associate degrees, certifications, and non-credit continuing education courses. HCC reaches out to four states for recruitment purposes: Maryland (specifically Washington County), Pennsylvania (mostly Franklin and Fulton Counties), West Virginia (Morgan, Berkeley, and Jefferson Counties), and Virginia (mostly the Winchester area). The campus serves more than 6,000 credit students, 9,000 non-credit students, and 800 high school students.

When students add exercise to their life, they will develop a routine. If they commit, they will have different eating habits and will have to fit exercise into their schedule. Students will develop a meal plan, and an exercise routine, that fits their lifestyle. This will help them have a schedule for their everyday lives. If all students participated in the exercise, their lives would become more organized.

Devine et al. (2016) study support the use of community gyms to promote exercise autonomy with minimal supervision and proven adherence to a regimen. The article is relevant and is an Observational descriptive level 4d level of evidence. The study is both credible and peer-reviewed.
As a freshman in college, I received several warnings, including always wear your shower shoes, remember to study, and be nice to your roommate. Another warning that was constantly mentioned was to beware of the freshman 15. The freshman 15 refers to the phenomenon of a student gaining the average amount of 15 pounds of weight in their first year of college. While many students may brush it off, this is a warning that actually seems to carry some validity. According to Wengreen and Moncur (2009), several research groups have examined the theory that college students gain weight in their first year of college and found that most, but not all, did indeed find an average weight gain of 6 to 10 pounds in a student’s first semester. While the reasons for weight gain will be discussed a little later on, it is important to stress that college students carry a significant amount of pressure, especially in their early years. As a result of these studies and first-hand experience of college life, I was taken back to find that Central Arizona College does not allow students to utilize the fitness center unless they are enrolled in a physical activity class (PAC) or if they are a student athlete. As students are a step away from going to college, they are frightful of their path after high school. Once students know their college choices, they are faced with making one final choice of where to attend. Usually, a student’s college decision is made by considering the distance from his/her home as well as if their parents will be able to afford the expenses that their college asks for. Colleges, though, look into the distance from home, SAT score, high school GPA, parents income, parents education, ethnicity, and gender in order for a student to be accepted into their college. All of these factors are important, but the one that tends to have a heavier weight in a student's college
There are a wide array of benefits aligned with physical activity and exercise. Exercising can impact a person’s mood and psychological personality as well as improve their immune system and overall wellbeing. Throughout the essay, the psychological benefits of exercise, the benefits of exercise on the human body and the recommended level of physical activity for an average sized adult will be investigated and explained. Exercise is a vital aspect of a person’s daily regime and should be included within all lifestyles.
There are many personal self-care activities that are extremely important to our health. As a college student I chose an activity that I believe is one of the most important as well the most difficult for college students to do, exercising. I believe physical activity to be one of the most important personal self-care-activity a person can do to help improve their overall health. As a college student I have experienced what most college students or soon to be college students dread the most; “the freshman 15” which could easily be avoided with simply some exercise. Although many things lead to the freshman 15 such as irregular eating habits, stress, and lack of sleep I am going to discuss just how important exercise is as well as how it could help improve your overall health.
The controversial topic in the realm of physical education is if physical education should remain in schools. Higher up’s are complaining about test scores and suggesting that cutting physical education programs would lead to better test scores. Technically, this would lead to more time spent sitting in a desk and listening to lectures in class, which is supposed to improve test scores. So, the solution to increase test scores is to take the small chance of physical activity that children receive during the school day and keep them almost completely sedentary for six-plus hours. When physical activity is restricted during school hours, children do not regain the lost physical activity after school, resulting in children who remain
