Exit Through the Gift Shop is a 2010 movie focuses on the story of the street artists; Banksy an infamous graffiti artist, and Thierry Guetta a Frenchman filmmaker based in Los Angeles. After watching the movie twice it gave me more doubts if what really the film is and question the authenticity of the movie that leads to decision to believe that Exit Through the Gift Shop is NOT a documentary instead it is a mockumentary. Why? Because of these three reasons; the story is misleading, Mr. Brainwash is fake, and lastly Banksy wants to mock the world only by making the movie with his purpose. In the beginning of the movie, it tackles about the story of all the street artists, it brought me to believe that the whole movie will centered the idea of how street artist developed skills, but shifted to the life of Thierry’s early success in art and become an overnight sensation, a ridiculous, eccentric and clumsiness, lack of artistic talent …show more content…
The purpose of Banksy’s movie is not teach how to become an artist but to prove that Thierry is a representation of current trends for art, Thierry did not spend years sharpening his skills to create ‘’art’ , but still people are buying it, they are highly favored and believe that his “art’’ has meaning and value. In conclusion, this movie is not a documentary, but a kind of mockumentary, this movie mocks the people and challenged the society. We trust what we see and hear from the news, and buying what we think is real and have value. I believe this movie is set up from the character of Mr. Brainwash and how “Mr. Brainwash” become successful in art industry, it is because Banksy created and used him to deliver a message to people. Hence, this movie is interesting and an entertainment that you can enjoy watching as it teaches us
In life, ones fate is already set. The choices one makes influence everything else in their life. Often, fate throws unexpected situations at you and one must learn how to interpret the reasoning behind it. Many believers in fate think for every bad situation that occurs a positive one will follow. Fate is something that you can’t control. All actions whether they may be in the past, present, or future occur because they are meant to. Everything happens for a reason, and everyone handles situations differently.
The film has a clever dialogue which resonated with young movie lover that found it to be exciting and
“Street art is omnipresent in urban streets and is a rish source of inspiration for artistic creativity. . . It possesses the aesthetic voices of the ordinary and enables resistance for the marginalized. Banksy’s street art, in particular, can guide students to think about various social and political issues and to reflect upon the immediate, if not unjust, world in which they live, to transform that world, and to
This movie has a good plot with memorable character at the same time Great performances. This film develops an interesting story
After some time as being a “street artist,” Mr. Brainwash, as Thierry now called himself, started to think he should put a show together. His work consisted of taking old, original art pieces, changing a couple aspects of them with photo shop, and putting them up as his own. The worst part was that he wasn’t even the one making the art. He came up with the ideas, but other artists actually
When watching movies, one can usually decipher what is fake and what is real, as well as, who is acting and who is not. Whether that be through exaggerated effects, poor acting, or previous knowledge, one can decide early on if the film being viewed is factual or fabricated. However, Exit Through the Gift Shop, a film directed by street artist Banksy, has left many viewers unsure if the film is an authentic documentary or merely a “mockumentary.” While some elements of the movie contain truthful content, it can be concluded that the film as a whole is a mockumentary, and just another one of Banksy’s notorious pranks. One of the first giveaways that the film is fake is by Thierry Guetta, the apparent Los Angeles filmmaker, who is the focal point of the entire documentary.
The history of the Situationist movement is critical into understanding how street art can be used as a political weapon to enact social change. Like Banksy, the Situationists believed in superseding art, which abolishes the notion of art as a separate, specialized activity and transforms it into the cultural fabric of everyday life. Street art accompanies an element of surprise and culture shock because it can appear anywhere. People do not have to visit a museum or gallery to see art. Moreover, he adopts the Situationist’s methods of detournement, which is the act of taking an existing form of media and creating a new piece of art with a different message behind it. In particular, Banksy’s Les Misérables' mural is a representative form of deceptive detournement, which takes an intrinsically significant element and places it into a new context. Tear gas surrounds her and the French flag is torn to signify the values of liberty and freedom being destroyed. This is one of several Banksy’s murals that are reminiscent to the Syrian refugee
At one point in the film, street art became the rave and was being auctioned off in auction houses, but Banksy and other artists did not believe that the focus for their artwork was about the money; rather, it was the passion and expressional aspect of their art pieces. He believed that Thierry's video footage would be the perfect way to depict this passion, but a majority of the footage Thierry had was unusable. However, the usable footage that was used in the documentary was enough to demonstrate the true passion some street artists had. Many have different motives of creating their artwork as well. For example, Borf, creates street art in commemoration of his friend that passed away and even his alias is in memory of the friend who passed. Banksy’s purpose of creating art is often as a form to criticize social problems or just for humor at times. A very striking example of his artwork as a form to express social problems was when he went to the Gaza strip and created a trompe-l'oeil pieces of street art against the wall, which at the time was experiencing a vast amount of conflict and civil unrest. This was extremely dangerous, but Banksy managed to place it on the wall without any harm, which shows his dedication to his
While some people might say that stem cell research is immoral and unethical, others believe that it is a magical solution for almost any problem, thus leading to a very controversial issue. Scientists have been searching for years for ways to eradicate incurable diseases and perform other medical procedures that yesterday's technology would not fix. With the rapidly arising, positive research on stem cell technology, the potential that exists to restore any deficiency is in the same way, likely to destroy humanity. America is suffering from its inability to choose who holds precedence over this issue. Too many of us find it impossible to reach a basis for which our differing opinions can be shared and formed into a universal and
Exit Through The Gift Shop follows the filmmaker, Theirry Guetta, who lives his life through a camera. After filming his life, he has discovered artists who have caught his interest in street art. Theirry Guetta follows these men around, recording them to make a final piece. Throughout the time he has taken to film these artists Theirry is abaft the camera. As an obnubilated character to all. While observing the street art world, Theirry had caught interest on different styles and engenderments of art. When learning incipient things, Theirry decided to make his own art and engender more and more each day. However, when he worked with Banksy, he earned his trust and secrets that were shared between the two. From the commencement of the film, Banksy verbalized that Theirry had no intentions to utilize the film or make his own art. Then, after weeks of filming Banksy, Theirry decided to engender
Surrealism is a movement that built off of the burgeoning look into art, psychology, and the workings of the mind. Popularly associated with the works of Salvador Dali, Surrealist art takes imagery and ideology and creates correlation where there is none, creating new forms of art. In this essay I will look to explore the inception of the surrealist movement, including the Surrealist Manifesto, to stress the importance of these artists and their work in the 20th century and beyond. I also will look to films from our European Cinema course to express how films incorporate the influence of surrealism both intentionally and unintentionally.
The peculiarity of the film comes when Thierry transitions from cameraman to Mr. Brainwash, following Banksy's advice of “give it a try”. When vaguely looking at the film you see it as an documentary of street art revolving Banksy, Shepard Fairey, and the birth of street artist Mr. Brainwash. The film is reviewed in many different ways with speculation of the film not being as raw as it claims. Depicting the film you see a clumsy, inexperienced, middle aged man, become a huge impact on the art world selling as much if not more than famous Banksy pieces of art. Banksy has stated his thoughts on the art community before the film “Exit Through The Gift Shop” and could be his own attempt to show the world a new form of critique of the meaning of
In recent years a new idea was introduced around Christmas, Elf on the Shelf. This idea came from a book that was published about elf that was sent from the North Pole to watch over children to make sure they were being nice and not naughty. The family names their elf when they adopt it and that is how they get their magic. The idea is that the scout elf watches over the family during the day and then when they go to bed the elf returns back to the North Pole to report to Santa. Before the family wakes up each morning, the scout elf flies back from the North Pole and hides somewhere in the house. By hiding in a new spot each morning around the house, the scout elf and the family play an on-going game of hide and seek. Children however are not supposed to touch the elf or it is
The film was engaging and thoroughly executed. The actors suited their roles, and played well. The theme in the film was educational and intriguing. Apart from some small flaws, the film was enjoyable. The circumstances around the film, as poor oxygen in the classroom and darkness, made it a little tiresome to watch, and therefore, the film seemed stretched out. In reflection, that impression was misplaced.
Common. Average. Regular. Those are not words that come to mind when we think of a hero. The play Death of A Salesman by Arthur Miller is the story of Willy Loman and his dream of becoming someone well known and rich in life. Aristotle defined tragedy as “the imitation of an action that is serious and also, as having magnitude...in a dramatic rather than narrative form; with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish a catharsis of these emotions.” The Death of A Salesman story is tragic considering it incorporates the struggles in life, conflicts with family, and the delicate subject of suicide. A tragic hero is a person, whom after making an erroneous decision, his or her life went from favorable to dreadful and led him to his own downfall. Miller believes that the common man has been a tragic hero just for the fact of living life with life throwing obstacles on its way. Miller stated, “I believe that the common man is as apt a subject for tragedy in its highest sense as kings were...the underlying struggle is that of the individual attempting to gain his "rightful" position in his society.” In my opinion, Willy Loman is a tragic hero. Although he is not a king or of high class, Willy is a modern tragic hero because he has a reversal in his fortune, is a moral person, and has a flaw.
