All chemicals were obtained from commercial sources and used without further purification, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (Fisher Scientific, 30% ACS grade), p-cresol (Acros, 99+%), titanium (IV) sulfate (Pfaltz&Bauer, 30%), nitric acid solution in water (Acros, 68-70% ACS grade) and isopropyl alcohol (IPOH) (OmniSolv, GC/HPLC grade). Milli-Q water (resistivity ≥18.0 mΩ-cm) purified by Barnstead NANOpure II system was used in solution preparations.

Thermo Scientific Genesys 10s UV-Vis spectrophotometer was employed to obtain the absorption spectra of test samples.

EEMs were measured by a PerkinElmer LS 55 fluorescence spectrophotometer.
