How Basketball Helped Me Grow Orhan Pamuk once stated, “A man’s sentimental attachment to objects is one of life’s greatest consolations.” Orhan is stating that through life the greatest way a man finds comfort is from an object that has a special meaning to them. Many people look towards specific objects based off their emotions, whether it’s for comfort or a sense of protection. Individuals use certain objects to depend on the reassurance they hope for. Therefore, from my own point of view, I agree with Orhan and have experienced comfort endlessly through basketball. Basketball has become my main consolation considering it helped me learn to overcome my fears, allowed me to obtain the qualities of perseverance, leadership and commitment, and makes up who I am today. Basketball became a part of my life when I was four years old. While my brother was the all-star on all his teams, my mom figured she would have me try it out. There I was, a small, fragile, four-year-old who only cared about dancing, refusing to go over to my coach because I was too afraid to become the outcast …show more content…
While I attended Yonkers High School, I played for the varsity team and was voted captain. As captain, I was able to work on my leadership skills and took part in multiple workshops with my coach that taught me how to be the best captain I could be. Between all the losses and team disagreements I realized my quality of commitment. Although times may have gotten hard within the season, I never gave up or walked away from my team. I now play for Concordia College and realized how important my quality of commitment was and still is. Basketball taught me what perseverance means, as I pushed through my seasons with multiple injuries. Without basketball I wouldn’t be able to proudly say that I’m a committed individual with leadership and perseverance
I have been playing basketball ever since I can remember. My family has always been very athletic. My siblings played basketball as well as my parents. My grandma told me a story about how I used to shoot a little basketball into a 10 foot hoop and I would make it. I play in the point guard position. I work very hard at what I do so that makes me advance in my skill for the sport. When I really started to realize I had a passion for it was in 6th grade. We had a lot of new people therefore our team didn't blend great. But even with my team being the way it was I still put everything that I had into it. Two things at the end of the season happened to me that made me realized that if I worked at it I could do great things. One parent on the
It just seems like it would be natural for me to begin playing organized basketball at an early age, but I did not other than the rough and tumble playground ball at recess. I began to yearn to play on a real team, and soon I would have my chance. It was the summer before the sixth grade, and I managed to talk my father into purchasing me a basketball and my mother into purchasing the rim. We put the rim up onto the shed and I began practicing.
Along with NHS, being actively involved in varsity sports throughout high school has made me gain a “work hard” attitude. This attitude of constantly working above and beyond will carry over to my future education and career to help me succeed. As a two-year captain of both volleyball and cheerleading, I have learned to be a team leader while also being a team player. High school sports have instilled lifelong lessons in me such as working hard, being responsible, and being a leader, that I know will aid me in by success in academics and a
One of the greatest lessons I have learned as a high school athlete has been how to overcome adversity and to be resilient after failure. As with any sport, particularly basketball, many valuable character traits and qualities are obtained such as: an incredible work ethic, a competitive nature, and the ability to be an effective leader. If I had not been a basketball player, I would be lacking some of the important characteristics that make me a well rounded and whole person.
One of the activities that I took part in that I feel has shaped me as a person, was basketball. I joined the Sea Point High basketball team in the tenth grade, in South Africa. Now basketball was not very popular in South African high schools, as such we lost our coach in my junior year. The choices that were given to the team was to either end the program or to continue without a coach. As team captain I rallied my teammates and we persevered through without a coach; we showed up for intensive training and competed against other schools. At the end of my senior year I was presented with the basketball player of the year; however I feel that award did not necessarily celebrate my skill in the sport, but it acknowledged the determination and
While being named captain of four sports teams, I was inducted into the National Honor Society and ranked top 12 in my class. It is exceedingly significant that I keep my Faith as well as my academics first. Likewise, It is essential for me to be a leader consistently, regardless of the circumstance. I intend to join Samford's football team, which forms me beyond determined to continue to be a role model to my peers and individuals around me. Unfortunately,
All throughout my life I have remained involved in a wide variety of organizations including clubs, sports, youth groups, and honor societies. My free time is consumed by all of these, and still I am still willing to venture out and attempt so much more. Despite constantly contributing my life to numerous things, it is undeniable that Basketball is what I am ultimately passionate about.
Basketball was a new experience to me a few years ago, but i never realized I was going to love it. When I was younger, I’ve always wanted to play the sport of basketball, and I got my opportunity to play when I was in fifth grade at Monte Vista Elementary.
My entire life, I have lived and breathed basketball. When I was only three days old, I was being passed around in the stands of a basketball game while my parents coached my older sister. In first grade, I was begging my parents to let me play. I couldn’t, however, because in my town kids don’t start playing basketball until the third grade. They let me join an Upward basketball league that was near my area, but Upward wasn’t competitive enough for me. So the next year, I went a couple towns over to join their city league so I could play. From then on, basketball was my passion.
I have many hobbies, and basketball is one of the hobbies I have.Basketball is a sport that requires great skills ,speed, strength and knowledge.I really enjoy when I crossover the opponent, and then I score with sometricks. In order to have a good basketball team you need great communication and teamwork. It is wonderful when we do some take move to trich the oponent, and the we score.I Like to play basketball outside with my cousin,we always have a good time playing 21.Basketball helps me on my flexibility in my daily life.I also play ping pong with my cousins. We usually play after school if we don't have homework. And we usually have homework wi we decide to play basketball rather than ping pong so we can sweat right away. Basketball is like my
I began playing basketball through programs at the YMCA and Parks and Recreation in kindergarten and I was not very serious about it.
My love for the game all started in preschool when my brother hung a mini hoop from the back of the door in our playroom. Soon after I began shooting on that hoop non-stop, attempting to perfect my jump shot. Once kindergarten came around my mom signed me up for the basketball program at my school. I loved playing the game and doing it with my friends made it all the better. I remember one game I scored a basket as the buzzer sounded to end the game and that was the first time I can remember feeling true excitement and joy from the game of basketball. Over the next few years, I continued to play basketball just in the winter for the program my school offered, improving my game and enjoying myself more and more. A big leap for me came in 3rd grade when I received a brand new basketball hoop for Christmas. Unfortunately on Christmas Eve that year I had
“Basketball is my favorite sport, I like the way they dribble up and down the court” – Kurtis Blow. My love for basketball started when I was very young, fifth grade to be exact. Growing up I always wanted to try out for my school’s basketball team. When I was young I use to always hear stories about my mom playing basketball throughout junior high and high school. Some of which made me want to play and do something that she loved to do. I eventually started loving the sport as much or even more than she did. This story goes way back to the fifth grade when I first tried out for the basketball team at my elementary school.
Basketball is my favorite sport because I remember at a very young age of about three or four years old, in 1998, I first watched a National Basketball Association (NBA) game. I was watching when the Chicago Bulls was playing as I sat in the living room with my father and my uncles. I didn’t know what they were talking about, but my eyes were glued to the television when I saw Michael Jordan dunked on two people. His performance gave me the motivation and I started playing basketball to make a career out of it. I wanted to move my family out of the poverty without any financial worries so I stared practicing each day. Every day as I was on the basketball court playing, I used to wake up early in the morning dribbled the basketball from my house to the basketball court and into the park. I was about fourteen years old about to go to high school so I was practicing to make the tryouts. It was the summer time like around July 2009 and at first, I wasn’t good enough so, I told my mother that I needed a couch to work on my feet and left hand. She called one couch up and we had a one on one session to train me. After practicing, I went back to the courts and played a full court game with older and bigger guys. It was five on five and I was the youngest of them. I had a little jump shot, but I really had a back board shot. I was good with angles for a little man at that time, but I was only getting better. I started challenging grown men that were old enough to be my father. I lost some games, but won a lot plus my younger brother was always there with me. He used to stay on the sidelines watching because he couldn’t play with me. Yet, he was too young at the time to
When I was eight years old I was all about basketball. I would dribble in the house and my Mom would usually yell something like “Go outside” or something like that. I would go and play outside, and anywhere I could. I just loved basketball. I was never on a team though. The most competitive I ever got was playing at recess. One year I realized that one of my best friend’s parents were starting a basketball team. I went to my parents and said “ Can I please go and play on that team?” They said it was fine. We were a pretty good team and I ended up playing with them until about 6th grade when my injury happened.
