The Final Stages of the Civil War The U.S. did not want to get involved in any other problems, as it already had its plate full. The Soviet Union took advantage of the situation by helping one of the groups in the civil war in Angola. Of course, the U.S. was helping the other side but unfortunately had to withdraw as it could no longer provide support. In the end, the communists took over government in Angola. In Ethiopia, the communists took over the government and fought against the Somalis and their allies. The Soviet Union supported the communists by providing them with aid and gun fire power, crushing their enemies. The biggest case of the Soviet Union getting involved in other country’s affairs is Afghanistan. There was an unpopular communist group who threatened groups that went against them. The Soviet Union was afraid that the party controlling the government would ally themselves with the U.S., so they intervened, killed the current communist group and put a new group …show more content…

The army was not that big, they had outdated equipment, there were high financial costs, and other major problems. However, when Reagan stepped in he was able to improve the military’s situation for the better. Increased budgets to help the soldiers and get new equipment. He also came up with “Star Wars,” which was a plan to build a machine to take down incoming missiles from the Soviet Union. As the manpower in the U.S. steadily started to increase, along with “Star Wars,” the Soviet Union decided to back out as it realized they were being overpowered. Reagan then decided to push away areas where the Soviet Union army had already taken over. Many of the governments were not stabilized, many people were dying, and the Soviets were not able to control the countries anyways, so the U.S. began to fund rebels in Angola, Afghanistan, Nicaragua, and El Salvador to crush the communist groups and the Soviet
