Four Goals of Punishment

As we have learned there are four main goals of punishment. We all understand as members of society that if you commit a crime in this country you go through the legal process, and the end result is a punishment. This punishment is going to be handed down from the judge. Like said before the four main goals are retribution, rehabilitation, deterrence, and incapacitation. These four main goals play a very vital role in the correction community. Many things play into the punishment role such as geographical location, money of the community to carry out the action, how full the prisons are, and how the judge feels how sever the crime was. We can first start off with deterrence which is my favorite goal. As we have learned there are two types’ specific deterrence and general deterrence. I like deterrence because it can persuade potential criminals from forming. We rarely use public deterrence as an option but this is my favorite. This is just simply taking a criminal and locking them up behind bars. You are taking this person out of society to prevent them from committing acts of crime. Some pros to this goal is the fact that we in our society as well as others. We have such things as career criminals. I learned this in criminology 101 at Grantham University. This is basically were the parent or guardian teaches crime to adolescents. They teach this as a way of life and there isn’t an amount of deterrence or rehabilitation that can teach these individuals different. These people have to be taken away from society whether it be for learned behaviors or for mental issues. Some would say that this goal is simply not giving people another chance. Another would be cost, why not try to rehab these criminals and put them back into society rather than pay for them to stay in
