Being able to communicate effectively with children, young people and adults is vital in order to form positive and professional relationships with them. It can help build self-worth and confidence in a child, young person or adult whilst also promote trust. Effective communication needs to be direct, quick and easily understood by the recipient. If not, it can cause a breakdown in communication leading to misunderstandings and have a negative impact on the relationship between those involved. Communicating in a positive way and getting to know the people involved can be useful in understanding their own individual needs. Another suitable tool is tone of voice to convey to the adult your interest. All of these examples will help to give a good first impression if you have just met, but, are also useful in ensuring a positive long lasting relationship with the person in the future. The main difference in communication with an adult, compared to a child or young person, is that the adult will be more experienced in communicating with others and more confident in their ability to express their thoughts and ideas. This is why it is important that you can change and adapt how you communicate with whoever the recipient is. An adult may not be as easily put off as a child would be if someone does not retain eye contact or talks over them a little, although both of these may be interpreted as rude or deconstructive to form positive relationships. Additionally, a conversation with an adult could include a topic more complicated than one with a child that may require you to respond appropriately. If you have not been fully engaged in the conversation with the adult, this could mean that you cannot respond properly causing you to give a vague response. The adult could pick on this straight away, leading to a negative relationship with them, unless you analyse where you have gone wrong and make a conscious effect to improve your communication skills for next
