Response The following saying “Good readers need to be good writers and good writers need to be good readers.” can have multiple meanings but to me I’m not sure. When I read this I think of when it says “good readers need to be good writers” I don’t think this is all the way true. You can be a good reader and not like to write at all and even if that person is a good reader and can read multiple things and have a meaning for whatever that is being read and be able to put it in their own words. But in general being a good reader does not necessarily mean that you need to be a good writer. Being a good reader can vary a lot, according to the context that is being read. It can mean one thing in a classroom and another when you are reading for
When it comes to reading and writing the two subjects go hand in hand. Every person is different and everyone has their own way of learning. How someone chooses to advance their skills in reading and writing all comes down to how that individual finds themselves learning best. I believe that in order to become a successful reader or writer you have to ultimately be strong in both. “How to Read like a Writer” by Mike Bunn, offers fair examples of various techniques on how to become more of an effective writer. “When you Read Like a Writer (RLW) you work to identify some of the choices the author made so that you can better understand how such choices might arise in your own writing”, (72). This statement caught my attention almost instantly.
As a reader and writer I always faced given assignments with the intent of doing exceptional jobs and take a sense of pride in my work to complete my tasks. As a reader, I will bore myself through out an entire book and realize I didn 't understand a single thing. Although as a writer, I can go on for so long losing myself on a topic because it feels more interactive. Reflecting on my experiences as a reader and writer have been very bold, I never really found a joy or an interest to become the exceptional student who stands out amongst others because, I always felt ok with myself and my results with the way I did things.
Many people have never considered, in-depth, the idea of what makes a good reader. Surface level first idea that pops into many people's’ heads is someone who can read fast and understand the text. In reality, the definition is debatable and much more complex. Being able to define a good reader allows for us to have a goal or guideline of what we, as individual readers, should be doing or striving to do. Some view a good reader as someone who can analyze and really dig into the text, while others argue that the reader should really have a passion for reading and enjoy the text.
Throughout my educational career, I have learned that being an avid reader and writer goes hand-in-hand. It is merely impossible to be a successful writer and lack the ability to be a proficient reader. That being said, there are certainly specific skills to ensure excellence in both reading and writing. While I am fairly confident that I have adapted
The author, David Smith argued that it is important for students that are science majors to become effective writers because “writing for a broad audience honed my research writing skills, allowing me to make my results and conclusions more accessible, relevant, and impactful, which arguably did help advance my career.” By practicing writing papers that were meant for larger audiences than just a student’s professor or classmates, the student is inevitably being taught writing skills that will transcend into all other areas of their study. When they write short stories, they are learning how to create flow and intrigue in their writing, that can also be used for their results and conclusions for research papers. Even without intentionally
Before, when an essay is assigned, I usually begin by free writing. Free writing is a technique in which a person writes continuously without worrying about spelling, grammar, or topic. Once I have brainstormed, I put it all together and organize them in a clean way. After I have finished my rough draft, I reread it multiple times, adding, changing, and deleting anything I believe can be improved. Once I think I have done the best I can, I write my final.
Writing is a process that can always be perfected and it is always a good idea to continue education for learning benefits and to sharpen your skills. Writing has always easily come to me; it is not hard for me to get my ideas on paper, but I have issues when it comes to grammar and punctuation. Grammar and punctuation are two key factors that can make or break a writer’s work; to be a good writer you must have those two down. This past summer in English 1301 I picked up on some grammar and punctuation tips that will help me in my future endeavors; I learned: using contractions like “I’m and aren’t” are not professional but using “I am and are not” is better to use, I also learned what a comma splice was because I never knew what my mom meant when she would call me the “comma splice queen.”
Captivating an audience with your writing takes many steps to create an effective writing piece, since there can be multiple ways to captivate your audience I will tell you what I have discovered throughout this course on making a captivating writing piece. Effective writing comes with practice, undoubtably the more practice put into a skill the more comfortable the skill becomes. “Practice makes perfect”, it is said so often that the power of this statement becomes dull, nonetheless practicing any skill more than one will benefit anyone greatly; to clarify I have discovered that when I am most comfortable with my writing when I have previously wrote a lot before. The beginning of this course was hard because I put little time into my writing, as a result the more the course called for writing the easier it became to write what I needed to in
The years of elementary planted the seed for reading and writing in me. Elementary school were the years to remember. Running around the playground not stressing out over school. Coming home and playing around. Elementary School, for many kids, was fun. From running around playing games in gym class to doing crafts in Art Smart to sitting down and listening to Mrs. Konopinski read to us in the library. Most people don’t recognize the vital skills that elementary school gave to us. It started as a seed in kindergarten and every year after the plant started to grow. This plant shows the growth in our writing and reading over the years. All of my teachers helped me become the reader and writer I am today. Each teacher helped with a little component
Becoming a better writer is crucial for my future success because in order to be a best hospitality manager or health care manager you should know how to write great responses to your customers or higher authority. If you do not have good writing skills there is no way that your company would be happy to have an employe with poor writing skills because writing and speaking are two important parts of your work you can not survive with poor writing and speaking skills in such professions because those professions are completely based on how you react to a customers problem and how politely take care of it while using a strong professional language which helps you to support your argument in every manner you want to. I do have a lot of family
When reading an essay for the first time one does not read with the intention of correcting but for enjoying. Any person can write a paper but it takes a good writer to get their readers to enjoy it and really listen to what they have to say. The skills of a good writer is being able to use rhetoric in any form of writing to achieve one’s purpose. When reading one of my fellow peer’s papers, “Wrestling in the Olympics”, I was really informed on the subject. I also found John Doe’s commonplace and ethos in his paper with his experience and connection to wrestling. Even so, John Doe’s essay on “Wrestling in the Olympics” fails to compose an argument to persuade his audience that wrestling should not be taken out of the Olympics due to his
What makes a person a good reader? What makes a person a good writer? To answer these questions, we must first realize the definitions of both terms: a reader is one who reads or enjoys reading texts and a writer is one who creates compositions using words. In order to read and write, you must have a broad knowledge of the language that you intend to deal with. Each of these roles has traits that are especially unique to it. Good readers must be able to understand: not just the meanings of the words, but also whatever the author of the text is trying to show them. Good writers, on the other hand, must be eloquent. That is to say, they are able to turn their inspirations and ideas into stories that convey their thoughts and ideas to their
The readings offered a series of thought provoking techniques that assist with the process of writing. For example using the “Invention Strategies”, which I plan on using for the reading selfie assignment. I tend to be conflicted when it comes to what I should write for an assignment. The strategies will help assist me develop and figure out what I want to write. The author often suggests constantly asking questions in order to develop inquiry. It would be helpful me to constantly ask questions as I read in order to get a sense of how my reading affects me and my opinions, which I can include in the reflection portions of the assignment. The podcast advocates reading through using physical pages and books. I want to reflect on the different
Reader, I begin my tale of woe and despair whilst sitting on the streets of London, watching the commuters pass by. The day is cold, darkened by a drizzling yellow fog and the sky grey like milky porridge. I dig around in my pocket for a minute before dragging out a cigar and lighter, taking a deep drag and inhaling the warm smoke. My existence has been a tormented one, filled with despair and sorrow, and in my last days of sanity, I hope to share it with you, Reader. Sighing, I lay back against the building wall and with eyelids heavy, I doze off.
Reading comes as the second commandment, you write first and then you read, and the more you read what you write, the more you get better in writing.
