Explain Why Is Gatby Really Great In The Great Gatsby

In the great Gatsby, the whole book revolves around the mystery of this man, Jay Gatsby. All sorts of people are interested in this man for many reasons. This meaning that he is a local celebrity, he has many differences and similarities to modern celebrities.

In the beginning of the novel the narrator Nick Carraway says, “Gatsby turned out all right in the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men”. Well we don’t know how justified Nick is saying this since it’s in the beginning of the novel. So we only see Gatsby through Nick’s eyes, so all of our opinions of him are based on what Nick sees and thinks. I can assume what he writes about Gatsby is the truth, since Nick says he reserves all judgments. I believe what he says because he makes us trust him through his comments on the first few pages. For example, on the very first page of the book Nick says, “Gatsby represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn”. Even though, Nick had doubts towards he could not help but admire him. From the beginning when Nick first met Gatsby he recognized his faults, but Nick still liked Gatsby. Nick is attracted to Gatsby’s bright and understanding smile. That’s why I feel like Nick said “Gatsby turned out all right in the end”.

A marvelous novel, “The Great Gatsby” written during the 1920’s by F. Scott Fitzgerald proposes a question about the truth of being “great”. The novel's protagonist, Nick Carraway grows close to Jay Gatsby; a rich, party man. Carraway strongly believes that Gatsby deserves to be known as “great.” Nevertheless, Gatsby should not be considered “great” for many reasons. To list a few, Gatsby does not do anything extraordinary to earn the title of “great”, does not work hard for success, and pretends to be somebody he wishes to be.

I think Gatsby is a very great person because of the fact that he did a lot of things for other people, for example he did Nick's grass and decorated his house to make it look nice, even though ultimately it was for him to see Daisy and he wanted it to be nice it was still a nice gesture. No one asked him to throw all those amazing parties and make everyone happy. All though all the things he did were selfish and for his own good he was still a great person.

Being great is something that a lot of people have different perspectives on. Perhaps to some people a person who is great is someone who cares about the wellbeing of others and always has hope. There are many different key points in the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald that make Jay Gatsby great. Gatsby is a poor man who had nothing to offer to Daisy, this woman that he had fell in love with. Ever since Gatsby has been trying to work his way up to win Daisy back by doing everything in his power to be wealthy. Gatsby is deserving of the title “Great” because of his optimism and ambitions to grow in his wealth.

I believe deep and soulful is a great interpretation of Jay Gatsby, “Nick, who starts out being on the fence about Gatsby, comes to think of his love for Daisy as something that elevates Gatsby. For Nick, this love marks Gatsby as the only one who matters of all the people he met during that summer” (Wulick).
