Teamwork and collaboration with other healthcare providers is very important. To function effectively there needs to be mutual respect, open communication, and shared decision making in the best interest of the patient. As a member of a team it is vital to know ones own strengths and limitations, this way patients receive the best care.
A leading member or buddies of a team can provide social support for dealing with difficult tasks and situations.
Courtenay, Nancarrow, and Dawson (2013) reviewed numerous articles that studied the effect of teamwork education (communication, cooperation, etc.) on the time and outcome of care. Courtenay et al. (2013) found that effective teamwork decreased the time necessary for critical treatments or surgery and also reduced the number of errors made. Courtenay et al. (2013) write that teams performed well when the responsibilities and role of each team member was known. Courtenay et al. (2013) also state that good teams shared an overall sense of mutual responsibility of the outcome of the patient.
Explain the importance of giving team members the opportunity to discuss work progress and any issues arising
Reflecting on experience is an important capability for an individual to be able to move forward. As (SOURCE) said, “(CONTEXT”). Moreover, individuals ought to be able to work not only individually, but also to work together in a group. Working with other people, especially whom you have not known is not as easy as it seems. In fact, it is quite difficult to develop an effective team. Through this reflection essay on the group presentation that I did last Monday, I have become more aware of useful strategies to deal with issues and understand what could be improved for future presentations. Developing teamwork skills is am important benefit for me as future professional workers.
Working in the healthcare field has its pros and cons, its risks and rewards. Depending on the type of facility that you work in, your experiences can vary dramatically. Staff members within a hospital setting tend to have a higher patient turnover rate, which leads to a faster paced work environment, as opposed to in Long Term care facility where the patients have a much longer stay. With that being said, there still is a common goal for patient safety and a healthy outcome. That could not be possible if all staff members did not collaborate with one another. “Furthermore, collaborating is as critical to the success of healthcare operation in an environment of limited and expectation of accountability”( Akil, H,& Watson, S. J. 2000). Collaboration is a team effort, and within that team each player has their own role. The “developmental process and the following steps are important for success; individual factors, individual team members, which bring unique attitudes and styles to the process of care, and these characteristics influence the outcome of collaboration.”( Akil, H,& Watson, S. J. 2000). With all of the hard work that each discipline contributes to a patient’s stay, the more efficient goals can be met.
Effective teamwork brings benefits for patients and medical staff. When a patient 's situation gets worse, the team looks to the leader and they will know that each person on the team can accomplish his or her duties and work with others to improve the healthcare quality. Teamwork can develop trust among other members and prevent them from making mistakes (Buchbinder & Shanks 293).Also, patients are more satisfied with their care when healthcare providers cooperate and reduce anxiety among patients (Buchbinder & Shanks 300).
Researchers have found that working together reduces the number of medical errors and increases patient safety. Teamwork also reduces issues that lead to burnout. No longer is one person responsible for the patient’s health; today, an entire team of health workers comes together to coordinate a patient’s well-being (The HRH Global Resource Center, 2013)
Team members are able to collaborate together and provide smooth transitions of care to all patients. The needs of the patients are focused on greatly, and with an increasing number of team members, care episodes become shorter, but still patient-centered. Team members stay within the scope of each individual’s practice and each individual provides care focused on patients’ illnesses which are based on an individual skill set (Rinchen,
Growing up I was always encouraged to push myself towards my goals and aspirations in life, not only does that motivates me but it also shapes the person I have grown to be. I am an enthusiastic learner that always want to broaden my learning, while becoming wise and overcome different obstacles that will arrive in my future. These great factors are why team collaboration is important to me, I believe that when everyone progresses and collaborate with one another great things will happen.
For example, I enjoy solving problems and when faced with complex or moral issues, I first will look at the big picture and figure out how I might address any risks. This is why I often enjoy the team I work with because we are constantly looking for new ways to address client issues. This makes my role exciting and I truly enjoy working with my team as we often look to each other for advice and support and we are always open to new ideas from our
After high school, I learned to become a coach for basketball team for young kids. I learned how to explain to the children to understand teamwork and responsibility at young age. For example, as coach I want to teach children the responsibility of getting good grades in school. I sit with them before each practice and gave a lecture of importance of getting good grades and being able to stay on the team. I than analyzed everyone grades to make sure the children are up to the standards of being on the team. For the ones that are failing or about to fail, I listened to their explanation, and then I worked on how for them to change their grades for them to stay on the team, or how to get back on the team if necessary.
The opportunity to inspire or encourage an individual is vital and should not be taken lightly. The success of a team requires passion, desire and the ability to adapt to change from each individual. As a combined whole, each person contribute to the vision or goal adopted by any organization. NJ recommends to the novice nurse to perform each function with excellence without excuses (NJ, personal communication, 2016). Yes, common errors may occur, however when performing a task or following the guidelines set by any organization, the individual will be successful. In addition, collaborating with each other gives the opportunity for the group to acknowledge and respect other views in the caring of patients.
Realizing that a group can become a high performance team is important. Accomplishing this goal is invaluable, advantageous and profitable. Once able to operate from a group to the high performing team is a great step into preparation into the big business world. Leaders and members must also realize not only how to accomplish this but that some problems will and can arise from different demographic characteristics and cultural diversity. That is if one is in such a group, which the probability would be quite high.
