Parents and administrators have been wondering of sports are literally helping, or harming education. Schools have had after-school activities for decades, but this has made too difficult for many students to finish their work. Therefore, sports should be removed to increase the ability to save money, improve grades, and give kids the opportunity to pay more attention in class.
For a period people have debated whether or not to get rid of school sports. Students can get off track of learning when they're playing sports, districts realized they could save over 150,000 dollars in a year, and students have extra time to do homework and study. Therefore, schools should not have sports because kids can prevent distractions, schools could save a great deal of money, students can have more time to learn.
One reason why children shouldn’t play competitive sports is that children can have an emotional burnout that affects how they play and their choice to play, plus if the child isn’t fit to play the sport things could happen that can lead to their self-esteem lowering. “Not only are these youngsters at risk for emotional burnout, they may also develop injuries that plague them for a lifetime” (Pushing too hard too young, paragraph 6) Jacqueline Stenson states that children are at a risk to harm themselves physically and mentally because she thinks that children shouldn’t play at a young age. Schools have been debating if they should get rid of sports in their districts, because they’re wondering if these extracurricular activities have been causing a problem for their students. While some scholars agree with this change most teachers are rejecting this change and want them to stay. Therefore, schools should have sports because they can help students relieve themselves of stress, kids can learn to work as a team, and children of all kinds can have equal opportunities to play them.
The first reason that kids should not play competitive sports is that they are stressful. Kids who play competitive sports often experience stress from wanting the recognition involved with winning. According to LiveStrong, “The mounting pressure to play well can increase stress and make children feel bad and lose confidence should they make mistakes or lose” (Huggins 2017). This shows that kids want to win and be the best player on the team, which can result in stress or pressure. When kids are put on the bench or the team loses, the players may experience low self-esteem. Also, participating in a competitive sport also takes up time because of the intense training schedule that is demanded. Because of that, kids may stress about schoolwork or other activities. This can develop failing grades or other consequences. Time.com states, “Student-athletes tend to take easier classes and get lower grades than non-athletes” (Square 2015). This is important to notice because the intense schedules that the athletes have may not allow enough time for schoolwork. The schoolwork may not be completed or fully understood, which can lead to lower academic excellence and poor grades. Competitive sports are unhealthy to kids’ minds. They can cause stress and pressure, and may lead to poor grades and other academic issues.
Sports is not the only thing kids can do to exercise. Going on walks outside everyday is good exercise, or throwing a frisbee or ball outside for fun, or even playing tag and hide-and-go-seek. These examples all can be considered exercise. There are numerous of activities kids can do to exercise that don’t include playing a sport. Writer, Janis Merideth expressed how she felt on the issue of forcing kids to play sports. Merideth states “If your young child does not think playing sports is fun, then don’t force him or her to sign up for the team. I believe that because kids today are so occupied on their phone, and other apps that they do not go outside and play. One reason we should keep school sports is because it benefits the mind and body. For example, in part two of the article, “No! Sports Are More Important Than Ever” states, “According to a 2013 report from the institute of medicine, physically active kids have more focus, are better problem solvers, and score higher on tests.” This proves that sports benefit the mind. After school many kids go straight home to their phones; however, with sports, after school they go straight into a fun, healthy activity that benefits the mind and body.
Without sports America's schools would shatter in boredom and stress. Kids feel sports help their health and grades, parents agree with most of them. However schools think sports will cause academic failures. If sports disappear America's students will get stressed and stress results in academic failure.
