How much do you think about the penny everyday? Probably not much. Turns out, there is a colossal debate about keeping the penny or not. The penny should be banned in the united states. This should happen because of the cost, the fact that it's a big waste of money, and furthermore because people don’t use the penny. That is why the penny should be banned. One of the biggest reasons the penny should be banned is because it costs money to make money. In 2011 it cost 2.41 cents to make and distribute the one cent coin(Sommer). That is 1.41 cents we lose every time a penny is put into the economy. Now, the penny costs 1.8 cents to produce(Story). The penny is inflating the economy because of the cost. The copper and zinc coin should be eliminated because of this reason, but also because of how it is a total waste of money. …show more content…

In 2011, U.S. taxpayers lost 60.2 billion dollars in production(Sommer). The cost of production goes up each year the penny is still being made(Sommer).The penny has wasted so much time being counted that it could cost businesses up to 700 million dollars per year nationwide(Mancuso). Because the penny is bulky and costs a lot to ship, foreign military bases have alternately rounded money to the nearest five cents to save money(Mancuso). The penny is a tremendous waste of money and also people don’t use it. The penny is barely used in the united states. The penny is often refused as change in transactions(Sommer). They are not wanted for change because of the low value. They are also commonly put in jars and consequently forgotten around the house(Sommer). Pennies easily forgotten due to the limited amount of opportunities to use them.
