Community policing helps citizens assume that the service of the police is there to take control of whichever the case may be when a situation happens. The community also needs to have some sort of equality with the police because the police and the community need each other to make the environment work. However, majority of the problem is that the community view police officers as abusing the law and although some officers do not all officers are bad. If the police and the community do try to work together then maybe the people can see that there are good officers and that it can change the way civilians see police officers. When it comes to the role of the police and taking care of their responsibilities the public needs to understand that.
By resolving the panhandling issue, the major issue, you can also start eliminating some of the smaller problems. Panhandling is a serious crime because they start to harass the residents and steal money from those that have sympathy to there lies. When residents give the panhandlers money, more and more panhandlers will come in the neighborhood to seek out the same opportunities. One thing that police officers can do is meet with the residents so that they can voice their opinion about the rundown homes in the community. At this time they can also seek any suggestions on how to correct the problem. The first thing for officers to do is search these homes for squatters and criminal. They should be check to see if they have any warrants. If no warrants they are
Since the founding of the United States, the responsibility for enforcing laws has been given to state and local governments. The biggest strength that this distribution of power has granted is that the citizens can have a connection to their officers because they are feeling that they are being policed by one of their own. This keeps the law, law enforcement, and your connection to it close as opposed to (only) having it enforced by entities who do not know your area or the people that live in the area. Along similar lines, local policing provides the opportunity to build relationships with the people they serve, which can go a long way in reducing crime. Despite these two strengths, the biggest weakness is that local law enforcement agencies can, and often are both underfunded and understaffed, preventing the agency from being able to combat crime and help their communities to the level that they wish. The other big weakness to local law enforcement is that due to there being so many localities (most with their own law enforcement agencies), there can be some confusion to the overlap of jurisdictions. The alternative to local policing, which has been gaining some steam in the United States since the start of the 21st century, is placing the responsibility for law
Policing has changed since 9/11. They wanted different ways to detect terrorist actions and criminal acts. So community policing was implemented. The government has provided money and has been supportive in agencies efforts to participate in community policing. “For example, the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), a branch of the Department of Justice, provide funding to local police agencies to hire 100,000 new community policing officers in the 1990s” (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2000 as cited in Chappell, 2009, 6).
Law Enforcement within the United States is limited as many people may feel that it is a dangerous job. With law enforcement being so limited there is one way the community can and has assisted throughout the years. Community policing is the system of allocating police officers to particular areas so that they become familiar with the local inhabitants. In other words community policing allows law enforcement to be at high profile areas while the community who chooses to be involved is the eyes and ears for law enforcement. In other words were there is crime the community will
Some people think assigning officers to communities can be rewarding and some people think it is a form of punishment. Whatever the case may be, people need some form of protection. Crime is very real. Today’s violence seems to go far past those standard reasons. As humans, people tend to overlook or forget who are there to protect the society from disorderly people. The good order of a community is important to those who lived and worked in the community. In other words, the little things matter to a person in his or her community. There will always be a person who cares and will take charge in the community.
There is a strong support for the belief that when citizens feel that their neighborhood is no longer safe, the feeling of insecurity forces them to move away. What it is important to mention is that this option will most likely be available to the middle class or those who can afford to move, but not to the poor, who have fewer choices. If the middle class moves out and the poor stay, the neighborhood will inevitably become economically disadvantaged. If by any of the already mentioned reasons an individual has to move out to a more hospitable environment, he will lack his trust and confidence in police 's ability to provide its first obligation, which is safety to the public. To deter this, police must
When looking at the Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) website we see that it provides information to law enforcement departments around the country giving them information on how to deal with a significant amount of community problems (Problem-Oriented Policing, 2017). The website of POP shows in details community issues such as vandalism, street prostitution, and domestic violence for law enforcement departments to gain ideas how they can be addressed. There have been large numbers of police departments that have taken advantage of the enormous amount of resources provided to them by the POP two such departments the Oakland Police Department in Los Angeles, and the other being Lindgate Police Department in Nevada (Calgues, 2015).
Police officers need better training in dealing with minority and learn how to communicate with them. Some efforts have been made by police officers to improve these situations with plans such as community policing. A question we can ask is how do we bring force the law enforcement and the minority communities to build a better relationship between the community and the police? For instance, Officer Tommy Norman, and officer for the North Little Rock Police Department have been doing community policing since he’s been an officer.
Since the 70’s police departments like Spokane Washington, I believe have proved that police visibility or presence in the community along with transparency working hand in hand with the community, have had a positive effect on preventing crime and providing communities with a sense of security (The Kansas City Preventive Patrol Experiment. (n.d.).
More police officers need to be hired with the growing population. This is a must with the increase of crime. To address the increase criminal activity there needs to be more police officers in those areas. Police officers retire and others leave the job. These vacant positions must be filed and the police ratio to citizens need to mach. “Currently on average the ratio of police to population in the US comes to about 2.3 officers per thousand
Most police officers are just trying to protect and serve — they would never consider discriminating against another person due to their race, and they try to responsibly deescalate situations whenever possible instead of resorting to violence. However, there are problems endemic to law enforcement culture, and many institutionalized problems that affect the work police do. No matter how good a police officer tries to be, it’s hard to make the world a better place while working from within an imperfect system. Law enforcement is something society will always need, and we are grateful to those who protect and serve, but the current system has issues it needs to address.
Policing is made up from many different people and organizations. Each state has their own state police department. Policing is more than just police officers out controlling the streets it deals with a lot of behind the scene stuff such as the FBI, Detectives, DEA, Department of Homeland Security, and Federal Air Marshals to name a few. Without policing in today’s society everything would be crazy, laws would not be enforced and all the different types of crime would be at an all-time high. People depend on police officers to protect their lives and property from any kind of vandalism. Law enforcement officers, which include state or federal special agents help perform these duties in a variety of ways depending on the size and type of
They also, of course, respond to dispatch calls of crimes in progress. Crime prevention is achieved through mere police presence. Negative interaction between the community and police is generally the norm. In communities policing, on the other hand, police officers are typically assigned to specific geographic areas in their jurisdiction and establish ties with the various community groups. These groups may include ministerial (church) associations, neighborhood associations, youth groups, etc. The idea is that when police are involved with the community they are not viewed as outsiders who are there simply to enforce the law. Crime prevention is achieved through positive interaction with police and the community. The goals of community policing are to reduce crime and disorder, promote citizens’ quality of life in communities, reduce fear of crime, and improve police–citizen relations. These goals are achieved through three essential efforts: community engagement, problem solving, and organizational transformation. In other words, the police are the public and the public are the police.
What they do or fail to do can affect seriously the span of the damage to life, property, and community spirit. Police officers are required to take an oath when they first join their department. The police oath is a code of ethics. The Law Enforcement Code of Ethics establishes the basic responsibility of a police officer is and I quote: “As a Law Enforcement Officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all men to liberty, equality and justice. I will constantly strive to achieve these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself before God to my chosen profession…law enforcement.” These are the expectations of the citizens, and when they are abused it threatens the faith of all. The most recent case raising unethical questions may be the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, an unarmed black male shot down by police officers. Another reason might be the rise in reports of suspicious deaths of inmates in custody making headlines across the country. These type of situations bring up difficult questions regarding the limits of police authority, are there some inequalities in the way that law enforcement officers treat certain racial, socioeconomic, or cultural groups? Are the factors, such as whether a citizen is ethnic or white, poor or Middle class, making a difference in the type of treatment one is likely to receive from the
