Plato was a dualist and so believed that human beings consisted of two parts- body and soul. This view is portrayed throughout Plato’s famous theory of the Forms of which he suggests that true substances are not physical bodies, but are the eternal Forms that our bodies are merely the imperfect copy. In his Theory he tells of a World of Forms representing knowledge, which he also names the ‘real’ world and the world of Particulars signifying opinions, the world in which we live in. This is shown by a prisoner who escapes from the chains and feels pain and confusion when witnessing the puppets and flames as the shadows look real. However, he continues to go outside and is blinded by the sunlight, before gaining clarity of real objects and understands what truth is. Each element in the analogy of the cave represents a message being told by Plato, such as the shadows represent the illusions and tricks which seemed real to the prisoner; however Plato describes that the senses cannot access his reality which is why it was a struggle to see the Forms as the ‘truth’. Additionally the Sun is a very important feature of the cave as it represents the Form of the Good. It is the reason for why the prisoner was able to finally see and understand the truth and how the cave objects were only imperfect Particulars of each Form as it illuminated all the other Forms. Plato may have developed his theory around the importance of goodness because he believed that there is a universal ‘goodness’ that everyone, including himself, should strive to reach. This relates to Plato’s elitist views that only philosophers can truly understand what is good and just as they are the only people who are not blinded by physical senses and the authorities’ opinions. Additionally, goodness is something that everyone attempts to achieve and so shows a strong moral foundation that would be readily accepted to aim for in our society.
