“Key to Success? Grit” Have you ever wondered what makes up a successful person? You may ask yourself: Is it intelligence? Is it determination? Is it opportunity? Actually it is none of these. It is grit. Having grit is very important; it is the key to success after all. Angela Lee Duckworth once stated in her TEDTalk The Key to Success? Grit "...One characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success... It was grit. Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in and day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years; and working really hard to make that future a reality.” Grit is just basically being focused on one thing and working on that one thing instead of always

If we had no grit, we would not be able to reach our goals. Because of grit, we went from living in caves to living in skyscrapers. If it weren’t for everyone that put hard work and grit into making our lives easier and better, we would still be living in caves. Without grit, no one would succeed. This is evident through my life and other’s. I needed grit to reach my goal of achieving First Class. If I hadn’t stuck with my goal and tried hard, it never would have happened. In the short story, Flowers for Algernon, we see Charlie Gordon using grit to accomplish a goal so amazing, that without grit, he wouldn’t have been able to do. Thomas Edison used grit to invent something we use every day: the light bulb. If he had never used grit to help him achieve this invention, we would still be using oil lanterns. All in all, grit has benefited many, but it can also benefit you. Everyone has a goal that they want to complete, whether it is a long-term goal or short-term goal. However achieving those goals is something that not everyone is able to do. If you want to achieve your goals, than apply grit to your

In The Significance of Grit by Deborah Perkins-Gough and Angela Duckworth who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania conducting research studies from grit. It states, she’s been doing this for 11 years (Perkins-Gough pg.15). Furthermore, I would talk more about it. Another Article is Brainology Transforming Students’ Motivation to Learn by Carol S. Dweck. Something I know from the top of my head is that Dweck is a Psychology Professor at Stanford University. This article covers more about the research in fixed and growth mindset.
Grit, what is this? Is it success, is it failure, or is it talent? As Angela Duckworth said “Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day-in and day-out. Not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years. And working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.” Grit is a combination of strength, persistence, focus, and dedication that helps a person to maintain the optimism and discipline needed to persevere in their goals even if they are head to head with failure. There are a lot of different ways people could think of grit. My concept of grit would be having the passion and perseverance to accomplish something. My goal is to one day be a travel nurse. There are alot things that come with nursing, becoming a travel nurse will be challenging but with courage, follow through and excellence rather than perfection you can achieve that goal.
When it comes to bullying in schools it has plenty of negative effects on some individual students. There are some kids who don’t have a problem with bullying because they are the problem.
Throughout Grit, Angela Duckworth argues that grit is the single most important factor in determining success of an individual. She splits the argument into three parts: the concept of grit and why it matters, the proper use and understanding of the goal hierarchy, and how an individual can develop grit. Duckworth’s argument is important because it replaces the traditional viewpoint of success being determined by talent to one which sees success as a result of passion and perseverance.

Grit is a predictor of academic, professional, and personal success. Grit can be defined as strength of character or the ability to overcome failure and continue to work toward success. People with grit are not always the people with the most natural ability, but their work ethic and ability to overcome obstacles allows them to achieve success. Grit is a very valuable characteristic in almost any venture, as it gives someone an advantage in overcoming the inevitable obstacles they will face. However, grit is much easier adopted when an individual has a growth mindset.

These articles encourage success by telling us that we should always strive through our work even if we fail. What these articles taught me was to never give up no matter what challenges I face. We will all fail at some point throughout our lives, but that should not stop us from giving up. Instead of giving up, we should stay strong and learn from those mistakes. In the Grit TedTalk video it said, “It takes courage and strength in one to understand that failure is okay.” What I think this quote was trying to tell me was that Grit means to be resilient no matter how tough it can be at times. All of the articles that I read have one thing in common; they all have the same opinion about grit. For example, in the Grit TedTalk, they encourage success because it shows how grit can be the difference between being successful and failing. Also, in the Mach 20 TedTalk, it stated that if you remove the thought of failure things that once seemed impossible are now possible. Those two examples show that fear of failing stops us from trying new things. It is holding us back from succeeding in the future. Failing is unavoidable, it is part of learning new things and trying again.
The idea of grit is to be used to help students improve on goals they’ve made, but in the The Downside of Grit by Alfie Kohn he would argue that somethings are better left alone instead of trying to pursue them and achieving them with little success. Kohn claims that grit can be counterproductive because anyone could be continuing something that doesn’t make them content with the outcome. He also discusses about how people with grit could experience issues with psychological health when you try over and over again and end up with continuous failure. It would be better to find an alternative pathway that would cause less stress, and end with success. Another argument that Kohn has is against the reliability of the research done on grit doesn’t rely on evidence. It
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary gives many different definitions defining the word “grit”. A definition that caught my attention was “unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger” .It gave me a personal reference as to reaching a goal, you have to be faced with challenges that you’ll need to conquer with grit being included. In Angela Lee Duckworth’s TED Talk, “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance,” she claims that having students being pushed to the max is the only way to see the full extent of grit, and I agree with Duckworth. I was able to demonstrate grit on becoming a better basketball play after not making the team my sophomore year of high school. Ever since I was disappointed in my results of not making the team, I had told myself this wasn’t going to mean I was done playing basketball .I gave myself perseverance in knowing I could make it next year with motivation.
Growing up, children are often told the common phrase, “If at first, you don't succeed try, try, again…” (W.C. Fields). This is used to teach children to never give up, a way to ensure that they can triumph over adversity and grow upon their grit. Although, people usually forget the second part of that quote, “…Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it.” (W.C. Fields). The second half of the quote is a full contrast to the first half, this is telling children to give up and just stop trying. Those who give up are often thought of having no grit. Some wonder if grit is necessary for society, to be more specific if grit is something that should be taught in school, I feel that it should not. Students switch interests so often that it is hard for them to stick with the same interests as time passes. When a student is enthused about a subject, I see grit as a way for one to express their interests. When one’s passion is put to the test and it feels like there is no progress or no more enjoyment left in that passion is when true grit is shown. Those who support the idea of grit, like Angela Duckworth, believe that grit is a big factor in how one succeeds.
A.) This particular study defines grit as, “perseverance and passion for long term goals”. B.)The method involved having 706 participants over the age of 25 go online and validate the grit scale where they would include their age and level of education. They also completed the Big Five Inventory which uses a 5 point scale to measure personality traits. As expected, grit most related to consciousness as opposed to the other four traits. Those who were higher in grit were more career oriented and less likely to switch careers frequently. Two way analysis of variance models were used to test for the differences in grit among different education and age levels. The interaction did not show significance which means that differences in grit for level of education did not vary for different ages just as differences in grit for age were not different across education. As predicted, their results showed that adults with more education have more grit than those with less education. C.) The study focused on perseverance and the Big Five Traits within the Trait Perspective. D.) The study noted that while there is much knowledge of the origins of intelligence and reliable ways of testing it, there is limited knowledge on the origins of why some people use only part of their resources and capabilities
