“Key to Success? Grit” Have you ever wondered what makes up a successful person? You may ask yourself: Is it intelligence? Is it determination? Is it opportunity? Actually it is none of these. It is grit. Having grit is very important; it is the key to success after all. Angela Lee Duckworth once stated in her TEDTalk The Key to Success? Grit "...One characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success... It was grit. Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals. Grit is having stamina. If we had no grit, we would not be able to reach our goals. Because of grit, we went from living in caves to living in skyscrapers. If it weren’t for everyone that put hard work and grit into making our lives easier and better, we would still be living in caves. Without grit, no one would succeed. This is evident through my life and other’s. I needed grit to reach my goal of achieving First Class. If I hadn’t stuck with my goal and tried hard, it never would have happened. In the short story, Flowers for Algernon, we see Charlie Gordon using grit to accomplish a goal so amazing, that without grit, he wouldn’t have been able to do. Thomas Edison used grit to invent something we use every day: the light bulb. If he had never used grit to help him achieve this invention, we would still be using oil lanterns. All in all, grit has benefited many, but it can also benefit you. Everyone has a goal that they want to complete, whether it is a long-term goal or short-term goal.
