Despite of whether going to college is worth it or not, recent college graduates have become more successful in their lives. Some people may think that attending college is a waste of time and money, while others feel that college gives them valuable skills in the real world. College will help the person gain the necessary work skills for his or her future job career. Moreover, the job that a person gets after college can outweigh the money and time the person spent in college. College graduates will be more favorable to have a better job than those who does not have a college degree. As our generation is rapidly changing, the work- force is getting tougher which means having a higher education is important in today’s world. Having a college degree is an obvious part of the candidate and is expected by the many employers. Nonetheless, going to college can also give students the opportunity network and develop personal connections among other students who are also interested in the career field.

A college degree is a valuable asset that could ultimately lead to a productive life in society due to the received education, but people without a college degree do turn out more than adequate in regards to societal success. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the forecasted 30 fastest growing jobs between 2010 and 2020, five do not require a high school diploma, nine require a high school diploma, four require an associate 's degree, six require a bachelor 's degree, and six require graduate degrees to get the jobs (College). Richard Nisbett reports in his book Intelligence and How to Get It, that they were able to convince academic struggling high school students that intelligence is malleable, it can be changed by hard work ,and that they are in charge of changing how they learn. The results were pleasantly surprising, these students worked harder and earned higher grades. 2

Education teaches one everything such as better knowledge, what is right and what is wrong and gives one the opportunity to learn new stuff. When students start going to school, they start learning basic studies and then at the college level, they are ready for a job. College is the last stage in students’ life where they get ready for a job or career. Bird suggests right, college education should enhance student’s chances for a good job because after many students get a degree in whichever field they like; however, they sometimes don’t get a good job or get a low paying job. “Other field most popular with college graduate are also pathetically small (Bird 128).”

Those who acquire higher education after high school tend to have a more successful career than those who do not acquire a higher education.

Most people have come to a conclusion that a high school diploma isn’t the gateway to success as it was 40 years ago. Therefore, one must pursue higher education to receive the additional knowledge a high school graduate wouldn’t. Jeffrey J. Selingo, professor at Arizona State University and author of “There is Life After College”, has proven the accuracy of this by presenting average intelligence quotient (IQ) scores. A high school graduate average IQ is 105 points and the average IQ of a four-year college graduate is 115 points. Also, higher education indicates to employers that you have the discipline and dedication to finish what you’ve started. Once pursuing higher education, students are given opportunity to experience activities those who didn’t pursue higher education wouldn’t. For example, I am Bahamian citizen whose main purpose of being in the United States of America is for higher education. Therefore, a Bahamian citizen is who isn’t pursuing higher education wouldn’t have received the opportunity to study abroad like I did. Studying abroad allows you to adapt to a new culture first hand – getting familiar with how they speak, eat, and dress. If I didn’t pursue higher education, I wouldn’t have met life long lasting friends, become a vital part of a few student organizations and learned how to play soccer. Many people take part in extracurricular activities while in high school, but don’t have many opportunities to continue such activity after graduating. Higher education prevents that from happening. In today’s modern world, recent scientific research has been conducted, which reveals that world-wide IQ test scores have risen, and continue to rise every year. In Alison Gopnik’s article, “Smarter Every Year? Mystery of the Rising IQs,” she discussed how these recent scientific discoveries relate to our society throughout the last century. It is evident that in our society a person’s level of intelligence is extremely important in our culture which is obsessed with being knowledgeable. In her article, Gopnik addresses the historical evidence that supports the conclusion that people are getting smarter as the years go on because of today’s society. Gopnik effectively explains the fact that people’s IQs are rising every year, by using the results of scientific research to support her point, and by explaining theories which state how the world’s social and economic environment are significant factors towards a person’s level of intelligence.

Education is a requirement for a successful career. An education helps you make an informed career choice. Employers value a college education because it shows you know your goals and have the commitment the work hard and follow through with a goal. Lastly education teaches you the importance of time management which is a skill which you can utilize on a daily basis.

Furthermore, a college graduate is introduced to many different subjects and life experiences which can help expand their mind and introduce them to more things the world has to offer. To help with my argument that a college degree is worth the cost I will do a comparison of the types of jobs that are available to High School graduates and the corresponding salaries associated with these jobs to the jobs available to College graduates and the salaries demanded by jobs that require college degrees. I will then discuss the non-monetary or intangible benefits of going to college and eventually getting a college degree. Next, I will provide a discussion on how going to college and getting a degree may not be worth the effort and cost. No one would argue on the value of education, and that knowledge empowers the individual to play its role in the society. But, there are always arguments on whether one has to have a college degree and how much education is enough. Albert Einstein once said, “The value of a college education is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think.” With the fast moving world and technology advancements,it is unwise to believe that higher education is only needed to get a better job and make a good living.
