According to Boykin “Caring is the foundation of nursing” (Boykin et al, 2011) and in order to be a nurse, it is essential that a nurse can demonstrate and practice professional communication skills. Professional communication skills not only allows the nurse to provide different methods and tactics to communicate with patients of different needs and ages, but it enables the nurse to understand and to give the best possible care and outcome for the patient. Provision of information and handover is another major point for nurses and relates to professional communication. Nurses need to be able to get a detailed diagnosis from the patient through communication, and therefore allows for the nurse to handover vital information to other doctors or nurses who take over to provide the correct and best possible treatments and care. The nursing profession requires a nurse to uphold professional communication, provision of information and handover in order to care for the patient with the right treatment, and to provide the best health outcome.

For as long as I can remember, I always told myself I would go to college. As a senior, I went through all the steps of admitting into a college, or so I thought. I did everything except turn in my mom’s signature to the FAFSA. Getting ready to submit the signature I realized I was not ready to spend $60,000 in a career I wasn't passionate about. Now here I am again 3 years later doing it again, most people would see this as a set back, but I see it more as an opportunity. This time I am prepared to pursue my goal of attending collage and purse a nursing career . I feel that with the opportunity your scholarship will provide I can reach my goals of taking care of others.

After researching many nursing careers there are three that are stick out. Although salary is a big deal today, one must be aware of the specifics of a job to make sure they enjoy the job. Three interesting nursing careers are nurse educator, traveling nurse and a pediatric nurse.

During my term in school I have often thought about what department of nursing I would like to go into, but I did not put too much thought into the steps it would take to become a nurse in Illinois. I have been so focused on being a mom of four, going through nursing school and keeping my job (not in medical) of eleven years that I haven’t had a real mental opportunity to consider how I will retain a holistic life balance, which stressors or challenges I may face, how I will continue to learn throughout my life as a nurse, nor what type of contributions I can make as a professional nurse. Through researching these questions, I have learned a lot about, the process and myself.

From that moment, I knew I wanted to share my passion for caring towards other people. I decided to pursue Nursing due to my past experiences that helped me develop fundamental qualities that defines a successful nurse. With that being said, I established a set of goals to remain on this path for success.

To save a life is an honorable feat by any means, but many do not have the education or the drive to do so. College students from around the United States flock to campuses in order to become a nurse, not understanding the hardship of obtaining any type of nursing license. In order for a student to be highly prepared to succeed in the degree, one must conduct research to fully understand how the nursing program works. If enough research is obtained a student can make a reasonable and sound decision on whether the degree will best fit the lifestyle that the student has. Nursing has a lot of information that students need to know in order to thrive in a nursing occupation.

Nursing is a very complex career that at many times requires one to be a leader. Nurses can be leaders in formal roles and also on the unit during any given shift. Nursing is a career that truly tests the character and attributes of those who choose to enter this career. Leadership in nursing is vital in creating a successful environment for patients. According to Stichler (2006), “effective leadership is essential to transforming organizations into environments that are safe for both patients and staff” (p. 422). Therefore, it is vital that as new nurses start out his or her careers that they learn from great leaders who are already in the profession. “Nursing is all about touching lives and lives touching yours along the way.” I feel nursing is more than just a career, it is the possibility to change and touch someone’s life. I have always loved caring for others but I realized this was my calling in the summer of 2014. My family and I were in Indianapolis, Indiana for a band competition and there was also a bike rally that weekend. As you can imagine, there were bikers everywhere. As we were walking around downtown, we saw a guy speed by popping wheelies. My mom said, “That idiot is going to get himself hurt.” The next thing we hear is POP as he hit the concrete pillar under the overpass. I immediately took off running back to him with my tiny first aid kit that I kept in my purse.

I am an Registered Nurse with over twenty years of experience in the medical field. I am now 42 years old. I have enjoyed every moment of my nursing career. I have traveled and learned a great deal from my experiences as a nurse. The past seven years I have been a nurse manager in a smaller institution, which has allowed me the opportunity of serving several additional job duties to increase my overall business skills. I would benefit greatly from a business degree and learning the financial aspect of the business. Most recently , I have taken the additional role of purchasing for my surgery center. I previously also did payroll. With a business degree, I could continue to advance my career in administration as well as open the possibility of opening my own

Nursing is an excellent career path to choose in today's society and a great chance to contribute to bettering the world of medicine. Nursing offers a broad variety of job opportunities and allows employers to live comfortably while receiving additional benefits. Once you begin a career in nursing you have a sturdy job for life.
