Exponential Growth: How Can It Be Applied To The Real World

II. Listener Relevance- The world we live in is slowly being torn down by water pollution, air pollution, land pollution. Surprisingly, a very simple thing such as recycling helps reduce all of these.

Our world is wasting valuable resources left and right, as addressed in both essays “Waste Not, Want Not”” by Bill McKibbens, and “Forget Shorter Showers” by Derrick Jensen. In “Waste Not, Want Not”” Bill McKibbens focuses on the importance of preserving our recourses. He mentions how wasteful the human race is, and how un-necessary all of the things that cause waste really are. In “Forget Shorter Showers” Derrick Jensen leans more towards the idea that no matter what humans do, they are incapable of wining. Either they lose their opportunity for economical and intellectual growth, or they lose their precious recourses and clean world. Both writers realize that we are wasting recourses, and believe that change is necessary for advancement. While the writers may have similar views, they have different ideas on how to solve the issue, and use different methods of communicating their ideas.

A quantity is said to be subject to exponential decay if it decreases at a rate proportional to its value. Symbolically, this process can be expressed by the following differential equation, where N is the quantity and λ (lambda) is a positive number called the decay constant.

The council has put in place the recycling program, to try reduce and improve human health. The programme has managed to tackle landfills from being full with rubbish that can cause the air to pollute, causing severe damage to human health. The recycling program has had a positive impact on human health, less pollution in the air means people get to live a longer and healthier life because , environmental factors such as pollution is not causing so much damage to the air and environment.

For my sustainability project, my goal was to gather information on how to reduce waste in the environment in order to prevent the United States from being a wasteful society in the future. First, I began to recycle everything I used, such as plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic cups, plastic forks, plastic spoons, aluminum cans, candy wrappers, and even all types of papers. As a result, I noticed the amount of trash I had (that was not recyclable, such as unfinished foods and food scraps) was a lot lighter and I did not have to keep taking the trash bag to the dumpster once a week. To conclude, I recycled for a total of 3 months, starting in the month of September in the year of 2016 to the month of November in the same year. I did this experiment to test my goal on how to reduce waste. I chose to do my sustainability project on ways to reduce the amount of waste in the world today because I learned from reading Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash by Edward Humes, that the United States is filled with trash and many times people do not realize the consequences of trash and how it’s polluting the environment. As a result, I decided to do my project on reducing the amount of waste in the world today. I am curious if people actually start recycling and reusing their waste that is unintentionally being thrown in the trash, does the United States have a chance of reducing all this waste?

Overall, the main idea of this essay was to help persuade more people to recycle. So let's get out there and make the world a cleaner and healthier place by

Imagine a world cluttered with trash, once beautiful beaches and parks now overflowing with garbage. Roads no longer driveable, air no longer clean. Masks will be worn, and disease is on the rise. Now, imagine if you could have prevented this. I believe recycling is the first step. As of 2006 America is in the lead for producing the most waste, producing 236 million tons annually. Not only are we producing the most waste but by 2100 scientists estimate the amount will triple which will have serious effects on the Earth. Both physical effects and fiscal which means public services and government budgets will be impacted. Our planet is already feeling the effects of pollution at the rate we're going we won't be able to stop the damage nor repair

Of the population growth graphs listed, the graph that is most likely to have a positive population growth momentum is the first one because there are many more prereproductive and reproductive people than postreproductive. This is because when all the prepubesents grow up, they will come to be the parents of the following generation, and this generation will be bigger than the previous generation. The third graph pictured is most likely to have a negative population growth momentum because there is a very small prereproductive group and a large postreproductive group.

Some say we could burn some of the trash, but with all that trash burned it would cause way too much money and with that all the ashes left from the burning it would put us back at our starting point. Also, a new strategy was shown to cut down on waste and they want to at least have 40% of waste to be recyclable and by 2020 to have it at 50%. Another thing is to buy things that you can reuse, for example, we can use glass jars and plastic containers for foods or other things.
