Teaching is the art of educating. It requires a passion for learning and a deeper passion for education itself. “I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit” (John Steinbeck).
For me, Teaching means that we are giving something back to better our society by shaping the minds of tomorrow’s leaders and innovators. It means opening up student’s minds to new ways of thinking and learning. In my teaching I hope to inspire and develop a desire in individuals to become life-long learners and to seize their own opportunities to gain knowledge. As a teacher, I will try to foster a nurturing relationship with my students. I will be empathic. That is to know what makes my students tick and have an understanding of their situations, feelings, and motives. I will provide enough soil, water, and sunshine for ideas to take root and for my students to blossom. I will be driven by my tremendous element of care and desire to “see their hearts sing” and that’s for them to discover the joy in learning and especially the joy in themselves.
I believe that as a modern day teacher, I should teach more than just academics. I should help teach the student values, principles and social skills. I will be a facilitator, a guide and mentor my students through the learning process in order to assist them in their own discoveries.
