Introduction:
In researching an industry for this assignment I chose the sporting goods industry that is a major industry with over $3 billion in sales per year. Within that industry I chose a company that I am familiar with “The Adidas Group.” The Adidas group is a publically traded company in Europe and with globalization it has increased its shares in the market. Adidas being traded on the European market is what we call an overnight stock. These stocks are traded at night here in the United States and open after the New York Stock Exchange closes at 4:00 PM eastern time.

In order to choose any segment of a general environment, we must first understand what general industry competitor environments are and how the environmental elements work. The General environment is composed of dimensions in the broader society that influence an industry and the firms within it. These are grouped into seven segments the Demographic segment; the Economic segment; the Political/ Legal segment; the Sociocultural segment; the Technological segment; the Global segment; and the Physical environment segment (Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskisson, 2013). The two highest ranking segments of the general environment for the Adidas Group are the sociocultural segment which is concerned with society’s attitudes and cultural values and Global segment which includes new global markets, existing markets that are changing (Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskisson, 2013).

Adidas is a sportswear manufacturing company started by Adolf Dassler. Adidas group has incorporated brands including Adidas, Reebok, TaylorMade-Adidas and Rockport. The wings of the company are widespread and have assimiliated other productions including handbags, shirts, spectacles, watches, balls, and sportswear. Adidas is being the largest company that sells footwear in the European market and have achieved a momentous market share at the global platform. Adidas has achieved phenomenal sale and have reached the pinnacle of success on the global scale with other international footwear companies (McDonald & Milne, 1999).
It provides a conceptual framework that enables Adidas stakeholders — from its 50,000 employees on through to suppliers, customers and communities — to better and more easily understand, assess and realize the multinational footwear and sportswear company’s sustainability goals.
Identifying influencing factors of a company’s macro-environment helps in the strategic development and management within a company. The macro-environment outlines an industry and the competitive environment as seen in figure 3.1, (Gamble, Peteraf, Thompson, 39). Within the macro-environment there are the political factors, economic conditions, sociocultural forces, technological factors, environment forces, and legal/regulatory factors. All of these factors blanket the habitat an industry and its competition thrive in. Inside the industry and competitive environment there are five factors that influence an individual company. The five factors are suppliers, rival firms, new entrants, buyers, and substitute products. The biggest impact on a company are these five factors. For example, Under Armour focuses on their industry and competitive environment to survive and grow. Their strategy to win over the market share from Nike and Adidas consists of expanding a stable and original brand within record time, taking an innovative approach to their product line-up and brand-name appeal where the market seemed to be barren, and lastly, the company enters in the foreign market early on to establish its brand and influence markets outside of the US.
The athletic shoe industry is made up of companies that produce footwear for athletic use. This is a strong industry and has been around for over 100 years. The athletic shoe industry is one of the fastest growing footwear industries and have top growing sales compared to other footwear industries (NDP Group, 2016). The key players that currently dominate the market are Nike, Adidas, and Puma (Kates & Bolduc, 2013). This paper will use the porter five forces, industry life cycle, and the key players to understand the industry. Over these years the athletic shoe industry has grown into a competitive market.
The general environment is composed of segments that are external to the firm. Although the degree of impact varies, these environmental segments affect all industries and firms competing in them. The
Nike must cater to a large portion of the new generation that demands the latest trends and styles. Nike should take into account the changing US demographics due to the rising proportion of Hispanics, Asians, and African Americans. These groups have different preferences that Nike should be able to satisfy. Nike should identify the next generation of loyal customers and provide for their needs.
It is important for any organization to consider the environmental influences that have been particularly important in the past, and the extent to which there are changes occurring. Having this knowledge will any Nike to stay on top of their game. The macro-environment consists of all the outside institutions and uncontrollable forces that have an actual or potential interest or impact on the organization’s ability to achieve its objectives.
PepsiCo Inc. is one of the leading brands in the world's food and beverage industry. It operates globally with a strong customer base and a wide array of products. This paper analyzes the general business environment for this leading food and beverage brand in order to assess what strategies it has been pursuing to operate in this challenging and complex environment.
