In Chapter 10 of Through the Eyes of a Child Norton explained what historical fiction means. He explained the values, elements, and how history fiction brings the past to alive. All our history and others’ are written in stories to remind and inform children about their history and others’. Historical fictions are stories about famous and unknown people, past data, accomplishments, and about wars (Norton 408).
The chapter starts with the values of historical fiction for children. The first value is just like all the genres we have studies, children read to enjoy. Children will definitely enjoy how the world years and years before they were born was. There are books that share how life was in the Middle Ages. In the book called Voices From a Middle Ages children enjoy learning how different people lived in the Middle Ages or the book called January’s Sparrow by Patricia Polacco which

Also, the use of language and the depiction of our daily lives’ details and ways can also help the author write in a historical authenticity way as well. When books are in a chronological history order children get better and easier understanding of what is history and what event happened first and what came after. Unlike other genre’s stories, in the historical fiction genre the author must have a very thrive understanding of the historical event he or she is writing about. Also, the characters most be real and involved in an event that is real for that certain time period as well. The setting most be historical authentic that sets the tone for the story. The author most also think if the place the story is taken is real and that the reader would want to know more about. The plot most be pleasurable and real. And most importantly, the story must be told with significant detail to place the reader in the historical
Understanding the perspective of someone other than yourself is an important lesson for a young reader, as well as incorporating cross-curricular learning in one lesson for peak instructional efficiency. In an article titled “Why and How I Teach With Historical Fiction”, by author, Tarry Lindquist, she expresses the significant role that historical fiction literature has for young adult readers and students. This genre introduces readers to more serious topics and situations, that include both fact, such as actual events, but also fiction, such as characters and incidents that are not real but could have very well happened. This article applies to the novel “The Birchbark House,” by Louise Erdrich as well as “Salt to the Sea” by Ruta Sepetys.
Characteristics/Genre: Historical fiction is a literary genre in which past events are formulated from genuine, factual history, but the plot of the story and characters are merely fictional. One piece of evidence that appears in both "There is Value in Teaching History Through Fiction" and "There is Danger in Fictionalizing History" is a quote by Valerie Tripp who explains, "fiction can make history matter- make it irresistible- to young readers (teachinghistory.org website 1, 8). In "There is Value in Teaching History Through Fiction," the author uses Tripp's evidence to show the readers that there is value is teaching history through fiction. The author is showing evidence that other people believe the same thing about history and fiction, including Valerie Tripp based on this quote. In, "There is Danger in Fictionalizing History," the author uses this quote to say that Tripp also knows the dangers of fictionalizing history.
Knowing the historical context of a work is crucial to understanding both its general meaning and its deeper essence. Often times, authors use their works as outlets to freely express their personal feelings toward a social trend or issue. As such, the time in which a story is written can have a strong influence on the message the author is trying to convey to his or her reader. Their personal reflections can be asserted in many ways; among the most common being through the characters themselves and their development throughout the work, the setting, and the implied themes.
Have you ever wondered why literature refers to history? Well, most literature is taken from prior history. Unless of course it is a fiction story, but even then there are still some historical facts involved in those stories. Literature portrays a lot of history. Without literature we probably would not know how the United States of America came to be, who helped it happen, or when it happened. As a citizen, those are very pertinent facts to know. Some literature that has to do with history would be the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Bill of Rights, Thomas Paine’s “Give Me Liberty” and a whole bunch more.
This will help my writing by encouraging me to incorporate facts where they seamlessly fit in the text, as opposed to placing historical elements in careless, literary locations that create a lackluster reading experience. By continuing to read texts from the historical fiction genre, an aspiring (as well as current) writer can monitor the various ways historical research affects a piece, whether it be in a positive or negative
Depending on the reader, the historical accuracy may seem of no importance at all. If a work of literature is good enough, one gets quite involved in the story line, and the characters become real. Regardless of the time or place, one's involvement in the work may supersede all history surrounding it.
This is because the historical fiction does not contain as much detail, the detail it does have may be twisted for the sake of plot, and emotion is not mutually exclusive to fiction. Truth is an elusive thing, and it is far more advisable to search for it in a nonfiction then a
Recently, I read a story of “A Coyote Columbus Story” by King. The story included history, the discovery of island by Columbus. However, this was written in different point of view, not similar to general history books. He was described as an invader from the other island, rather than a hero who explored the new land. From First nation people’s eyes, Columbus must have been a foreigner who stole everything from their land. His characteristic was told to be rude and disrespectful. Why does it contain different story comparing history books? Why is Columbus described as an invader? I realized story depended on who is writing the story. I started thinking about how history books were written, and furthermore, considered why novels were written.
In chapter 2 of Through the Eyes of a Child Donna E. Norton explained some milestones in the child’s literature development then shared the children and the family changing views of the early books for children. Traditions and values were told through stories by parent and shared from generation to generation, which was one of the milestone of the children’s literature. Another milestone of literature started in the mid-1400s, which was the early printed books handwritten by the monks and scribes. Later, in1600s political upheaval, religious dissent, and censorship brought a big affected to the children’s literature. The Puritans were the first to provide children’s literature in their schools. By1640s, Massachusetts required families by law to teacher and read literature to their children. Other milestones mentioned in the chapter where the two adventure books that appeared in the late 18th century and the Newbery’s books for children. John Locke was a writer and publisher in 1744 who wrote and published books for children.
When reviewing a book and examining its evidence it is best to know the thesis of the book and a brief summary of the information within, in order to understand further arguments made about the book. Remembering the Road to World War Two “discusses the evolution of interpretations and the archival, disciplinary, cultural and political factors that have contributed to the construction of shifting historical understandings.” Finney argues that historians, like any other person, are influenced by dominant memory and therefore may subconsciously suggest interpretations and areas of research, which therefore helps to show that objective history is a myth. He also point out that historical writing is not a product of merely empirical factors but also one of context-grounded aesthetic, ideological
What is it about historical narratives that give readers a sense that going into it, that they will become knowledgeable about a certain topic? What is considered knowledge in a historical narrative? I would say what a makes a historical narrative is that it contains facts such as dates, accounts of events, and information about the lives of people. These types of things can be measured through various forms of tests. (we know how much emphasis is put on what a person can recall). As a result, a reader may say that historical narratives are much more objective. Also, the writers of these historical novels are able to make connections to the modern day with the readers.
The genre of historical fiction novels can be subdivided into many categories and often crosses genres, such as historical mysteries and romances. The traditional definition of the historical fiction genre is “fiction set in the past” where the author is writing from research rather than personal experience. This definition leaves a lot of room for interpretation, controversy, and contradiction. Critics in the media, even when they praise individual historical novels in their reviews, somehow manage to turn this praise into criticism of the genre as a whole. In 1950, author Howard Fast, a historical novelist himself, wrote: “This is an era of many historical novels, few of them good and very few indeed which have more than a nodding
Historical fiction is set in the past and tells a story using details from the time and place to which it is referring. This can and often includes historical figures giving the reader a sense of the time and place. Children who read historical fiction gain understanding of their own heritage, people, beliefs values hardships and physical surroundings. They can make the connections between the influences of the past and what influences them now. As they discover universal truths identify feelings and behaviors, it will encourage them to make a better choice for themselves. Understanding different viewpoints will develop sensitivities and empathy helping them to realize that history shows us that we must work together.
Literature is defined as written works published on a particular subject. Literature can also be viewed as witness, because it can be a source of proof based on the events it was written on. Literature as witness allows readers to get a deeper understanding of the issues that have happened based off of what the books are about. Those who read literary texts such as historical novels, memoirs and novels are witness to historical events. These texts can be viewed as witness because the events mentioned are based off of true life events. Some may argue historical fiction is not real and therefore could not be viewed as a reliable source. Even though historical fiction is made up of fictional characters, the conflicts that are mentioned are based
