Social networking is the mainstream way to communicate with anyone. Teenagers are obsessed with social networking, no one calls each other unless it’s extreme circumstances or their mother. Sharing pictures, sharing life stories, and sharing opinions online has been the way of life and the norm for kids growing up with computers and smart phones. The parents to this generation have not grown up in the same environment and have different standards for online activity. His personal beliefs are backed up with statistics and hold true to many people in his generation but not in the younger ones.

Social media is ruining our perception of the world, from people editing their photos to look better, to people lying about who they are. 97% of teenagers are on social media, and about 37% of social media users report feeling upset or having negative thoughts after using apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. Lawrence Robinson, the managing editor and author at HelpGuide.org states, “Ironically for a technology that’s designed to bring people closer together, spending too much time engaging with social media can make you feel more lonely and isolated—and exacerbate mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.” (Robinson 2).
There are many definitions of counseling, but most share the same idea: it is when one person helps another. To me counseling represents one word more than any other: Change. One person is unhappy with some area of their life and wants it to change while the other person helps to facilitate that change. Just as there are many definitions of counseling there are many types of counseling with different philosophies.
Social media has been known to help students develop important knowledge and social skills. “At first glance this may seem like a waste of time; however it also helps students to develop important knowledge and social skills, and be active citizens who create and share content.” (Chen 3). The more time teens spend on social media the more they become aware of their own social side and how to interact with others, especially their peers. “Some types of social media has beneficial effects, like helping adolescents establish some sense of identity and build networking skills” (Riley Davis). Too much time being spent on social media can also exploit teens to some harsh realities that they’ve probably never experienced in their lives before.

With social media playing a major role in contemporary society, everyone is on sites such as Twitter and Tumblr posting photos and updating statuses. However constantly being updated with the latest information can often lead an individual to be burdened with the modern – day catch phrase ‘FOMO’ which involves feelings of inadequacy and anxiety mainly catalyzed by living in a Western society.
