Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg while studying at Harvard University in 2004. Prior to founding Facebook, Zuckerberg had already developed a number of social networking sites for students including Coursematch, and Facesmash. It was originally known as “The Facebook” and was launched exclusively for Harvard students and staff. Within 24 hours, 1,200 students had signed up, and after one month, over half of the undergraduate student body had a profile. The Facebook continued to expand to other Boston, Ivy League, and eventually all US universities. In 2005, The Facebook was renamed Facebook, and the website url was changed to Facebook.com, after purchasing it for $200,000 USD. Starting in September of 2005, the service was extended to high school students in the US, and in the following month it began to spread to universities in the United Kingdom and other universities worldwide. Beginning in September of 2006, Facebook became available to anyone with a registered email address thirteen years or older, making it more accessible to the general population. For its initial launch, Facebook was initially incorporated as a Florida LLC. Facebook was initially funded for the first few months after its launch by Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Severin, Mark’s roommate and associate at Harvard, who had taken equity stakes in the company.
