Facebook is an online social networking platform and a for-profit corporation that was launched in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. It allows people to maintain and establish social relationships by generating personal profiles, where they are able to upload pictures, text, videos, music, and add others to their friend list. Users are able to post statuses and comments to their friends and on their own profile pages, sharing and liking certain content through the influence of Facebook’s social occurence. This can be attributed to advertisers who are seeking additional information about the consumer with the aim to target a certain demographic, to increase profit. In June 2016, 1.13 billion users logged into Facebook daily (The Top 20 Valuabe Facebook Statistics, 2016), since the 1980’s, social media is a lot more sophisticated and has grown tremendously when it comes to the variety of social networking sites. As the world becomes more complex and governments everywhere struggle, trust in the Internet is more important today than ever. “The Internet is our shared space. It helps us connect. It spreads opportunity. It enables us to learn. It gives us a voice. It makes us stronger and safer together” (Zuckerberg, 2014). Facebook is also being used by its consumers as a source of news and information, and an easy option with no owing costs to contact family and friends through Facebook’s messenger call, messenger video and messenger chat. To make a profit, Facebook effectively encourages users on a regular basis to provide further information about themselves, and users tend to believe that their overall involvement with Facebook will improve.
