Facebook transformed society in many ways including: how people communicate, how they spend their time, how politicians campaign, and how businesses and consumers interact. Facebook is one of the largest social media websites that allows users to communicate, connect, and share with their friends and family. Facebook was launched in 2004 to exclusively Harvard students, but in 2006, it allowed anyone was 13 or above to have an account. Though Facebook was only launched in 2004, it has about 1.7 billion users who spend about 50 minutes each day on this social-networking website.
Facebook was founded in Cambridge, MA, on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes. Mark Zuckerberg says he created Facebook because, “…. my goal was to help people understand what was going on in their world a little better. I wanted to create an environment where people could share whatever information they wanted, but also have control over whom they shared that information with” (Zuckerberg). A day after Facebook was launched in Harvard University, it already had about twelve hundred to fifteen hundred users.
When Facebook was founded, it was only available to students at Harvard. Zuckerberg wanted to see if his website would be a success, so first it was only Harvard students that were eligible to have an account.
