Factors That Affect Management Functions University of Phoenix MGT 330 Organizational Ethics and Social Responsibility David Mallory September 3, 2009 The Factors That Affect Management Functions Introduction There are many things that have an effect on the four functions of management; planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Defined as Enterprise Environmental Factors, or any or all external environmental factors and internal organizational environmental factors that surround or influence the project’s success (PMBOK, 2004), or the overall success of an organization, these factors, which are in many cases beyond the control of managers, create the need for effective managers who can think and perform outside the box. Though globalization within Target has not produced any stores outside of the United States, the company does do a large share of business with foreign markets. In May of 2005, Target began its overseas operation in Bangalore, India and these operations consist of customer service representatives, team member services, internet support, and technical support. Some critics, along with team members felt this was another case of outsourcing but Target management downplayed these accusations and use strategic planning and organizing by saying “this is an attempt to reach outside our cultural barrier and unite with are foreign friends abroad to reach Target’s goal and achieve great guest services to our guest.” Ethics Ethics are principles or standards of human conduct sometimes called morals. Target has been successful in not having any major ethical issues that could jeopardize the company brand name, but Target management does realize the risk of unethical issues that could arise within the company. Target uses yearly training and tools on issues such as sexual harassment or harassment. The methods Target uses to teach these principles are role playing, video and computer modules, and communication techniques for reporting harassment in various circumstances. These training techniques show good consistent planning, controlling, leading, and organizing within Target management. One
