Not Just Food: Economics of factory farm Does the economic benefits of factory farming outweigh the disadvantages? Our lives are so closely linked to these farm animals, what makes them so different from our cats and dogs? We care much of our pets, but when it comes to the term ”factory farm”, little do we know about the impact of factory farm and the truth behind the scene. The producer can take small sacrifice to make big difference and benefits can still be achieved. The economic benefit of factory farm does not necessary outweigh the disadvantages. It’s time we ought to boycott factory farm, not just for the welfare of animals, but also for our own sake. Money is everything ‘Practicality and economic impact are already used too often to justify keeping animals in unethical and cruel conditions’ (Green Party NZ). Why do these large companies and government often use it as a legitimate excuse? Because it’s cheap. Factory farms in New Zealand, in order to maintain clean and high sanitation; cleaning process need plenty of water and energy, these organic substance of water waste effects our stream and river. The organic substances contain high level of microorganism and bacteria; this can affect the pH level, oxygen rate, temperature, and even the color of our rivers and streams. Cost of dealing with environment of water pollution, air pollution and biochemical waste is extremely expensive. New Zealand is always a good image of “green, clean, & 100% natural”, many species such as fish and other aquatic species in New Zealand is threaten by the pollutes from factory farm.
