Unfortunately for other animals, dairy cows are not the only creatures living on these farms. Chickens, pigs, and male cows also meet an unbearable fate. They do not go through the cycle of pregnancy like the mother cows but are met with all the other same unfavorable conditions. Yes, they too are force fed an unnatural diet, pumped with hormones so that they grow to unnatural and unhealthy sizes, and are physically abused. The physical abuse is a separate problem to evaluate. These animals live in cages that they cannot move in. They rarely if not ever see the outside world. There is only dirt and their own fecal matter surrounding them, along with others of their species expecting the same fate. All the sadistic details are hard for many …show more content…
Keeping local businesses alive is important and can help everyone thrive. Buying from local farms can promote this stimulation to the local economy and keep this local business alive. Supporting the local farm is a far better choice than going to the grocery store and getting the factory farm products. This decision benefits the consumer, the environment, and the animals by not giving the factory farms business in the first place. Yes, buying from a farm at all can still contribute to some of the issues that also arise with factory farms but overall factory farms are the social problem and cause far more harm than a local farm would. Objectively, buying local is important because it is beneficial to the local economy and it can also help the environment by limiting shipping and uses of resources. Buying local can help build jobs in the community but may also take away from the jobs that are dedicated to transporting goods. Subjectively, some may prefer the convenience of buying from somewhere that does not sell local products or that is a chain rather than local business. For some it may not matter whether the community thrives or not despite how not buying products from factory farms may help many different
Factory farming has many flaws in the system, animal abuse is one that is usually over looked by owners of these farms. Many works while on this farm are exposed to the cruelty that the animals go through but often can do very little to change it. “Factory farms pack animals into spaces so tight that most can barely move. Many have no access to the outdoors, spending their lives on open warehouse floors, or housed in cages or pens.” (aspca) Without the room to engage in natural behaviors, animals become exposed to severe physical and mental distress. Many animals become trampled to death and never experience the proper life
When it comes to the topic of buying local, many people who are familiar with the subject hold strong opinions on it, and Spriggs’ essay shows no exception. With Spriggs’
The local sustainable food chain is a great deal better for the environment than any of the other food chains. It is way better than the other food chains because the farmers that
The effects of factory farming is not worth the damage that is done to the health of the environment, animals, and people. The idea of a factory farm is to produce meat at a faster pace, but the way these companies accomplish this task makes life a living hell for the animals. For example, “They’re often given so little space that they can’t even turn around or lie down comfortably. Egg-laying hens are kept in small cages, chickens and pigs are kept in jam-packed sheds, and cows are kept on crowded, filthy feedlots”(Factory). The animals on these farms have to experience constant fear and agony, especially since most factory farmed animals will be genetically manipulated to grow larger or to produce more milk or eggs than they naturally would, and suffer severe pain throughout their entire life(Factory). Animals, especially cows, are being abused not only physically, but mentally as well.. For example, “just within hours of birth, calves are taken away from
According to a website spiked “in defense of factory farming”, the CEO Gary Corbett from Fair Oaks dairy farm in Indianapolis said that the cows lives better than other animals. The cows have their own Scientifics that created
Factory farming is the industrial production of raising animals such as cattle, poultry, swine, and sheep for meat. Many questions and concerns within the field are based on animal treatment and the cleanliness of the factory farm facilities. These questions and concerns are needed to guarantee the safety of both the animals and consumers. The unhealthy living environments combined with excessive antibiotic use in factory farms causes concern in the meat processing industry.
Hi, Ella! Kliman addresses many pros and cons of buying local foods! Just to name a few, Kilman begins by explaining that "local reduced our 'carbon footprint'" because trucks do not have to travel as far to deliver fresh produce (Kilman 67). We are made to believe that local foods change the system entirely, however, this is not really the case. Kilman provided a statistic that "local and organic foods currently make up 3 percent of food consumption in America" (Kilman 67). In the long run, this small amount of percentages does not do as much as consumers think it does. People often argue that local food is fresher and overall better, but Kilman says that "local is not inherently fresher, nor is it inherently better" (Kilman 68). Since the
In America sacred cows do not exit, in fact we defend our freedom to choose meat. However, that freedom tears at the very core of who we are as a nation. If America is truly just, how can we explain factory farming? Factory farming is not just intrinsically evil; it is cruel and unusual punishment. Animals are regularly sawed in half and placed in cramped quarters throughout their existence. The media regularly denounces the use of the death penalty but are completely complacent regarding factory farming.
Factory farms regularly administer hormones to beef cattle and dairy cows in order to boost growth rates or increase milk production. When hormones are injected into an animal, some of the hormones pass into its waste, and can eventually contaminate surface and groundwater. Research demonstrates that hormone pollution can disrupt the development and reproductive systems of fish. Cows in the dairy industry can be given growth hormones in order to increase their milk production. Once their productivity declines, these cows are slaughtered for beef. The hormones commonly used by the U.S. dairy industry have been shown to significantly increase the risk of breast, prostate, and colon cancer in beef consumers. Some products are use in agriculture, such as pesticides (including insecticides, herbicides and fungicides), as well as synthetic fertilizers, hormones and antibiotics.
Purchasing produce from the farmers’ market ensures that you are directly supporting local farmers, bakers, and artisans, while still not going over your weekly grocery budget. I’d say that is a win-win.
There are many differences between big farms and traditional farms such as environmental issues, animal waste, antibiotic use, health issues, animal treatment, and economic involvement with their communities just to name a few.
Some people may believe because a company grows locally, they’ll have more inventory. However that’s not the case because the problem here “invloves the way food miles are calculated.”( source C) For instance, if a truck if shipping it’s a couple thousand vegetables a couple thousand miles away, it would be the same as a local company sending a hundred vegetables a hundred miles away. Therefore decreasing the profit they could have made if they weren’t selling just locally.
Purchasing local helps grow other businesses as well as the local tax base. And as far as the health impact, buying your meat certified humane and local, ensures your purchasing meat that has a nutritious diet without antibiotics, or hormones, animals raised with shelter, resting areas, sufficient space and the ability to engage in natural behaviors according to eat wild.com There are many websites you can look up with directories of local owned business that implement healthy practices and keep things local. You can also participate in local co-ops which grow their own produce and share within the group.
You shouldn’t have to be an animal lover to get upset over the treatment of these animals. 99% of animals raised in farms are raised in factory farms, and of those, 97% are tortured. On top of that, most of the animals do not receive antibiotics for the abuse they go through.
Buying local has many benefits as it causes less pollution in the atmosphere as food produce would not have to be transported across the country, therefore there are less emissions produced and it also helps our local economy.
