Reconstruction developed in 1865 and discontinued in 1877. What happened before Reconstruction was that the civil war fought by the Northern and Southern whites because of state rights, trading and slavery. During Reconstruction, the newly freed African Americans emerged and that was when Reconstruction started. Life changed for newly freed African Americans as the result of Reconstruction because it meant that they could start their worthwhile lives. The impact of Reconstruction on African American were socially and economically a failure because they were mistreated and were in control by the rich white people however, Reconstruction was successfully politically because African Americans were involved with the government.

For the African Americans it made new improvements from political representations. According to Document O the representatives were the first colored Senator of the United States.Washington was Currier and Ives in 1872. In Document O it shows a group portrait of African Americans. It was politically a success because since they were the first American Americans, people would buy the portraits in a way of looking up to them and being glad because after all they were able to vote. With this change they had the chance to have an opinion and they really did deserve to vote since they didn’t have it easy and they were always in control by the whites, The 13, 14 and 15 amendments were laws that somewhat protected the slaves. “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous conditions of servitude( Document K)”. Amendment 15 is one of the important laws for the African Americans because if they ever wanted to vote, they would not deny their votes because it’s by law that the right to vote cannot be denied regardless of their color and background. This was a good thing for the slaves because they would somewhat start doing what they couldn’t do before. The amendments were life changing for African Americans because slavery wouldn’t exist nomore in the U.S. In addition with the amendments no State would make or enforce any law and most importantly they couldn’t deprive any person and lastly deny any person within its command. If these three amendments didn’t exist it would be a harder life for the African
A) were very helpful to African Americans. They ended slavery, made anyone born in the United States a citizen, and allowed African Americans to vote. Reconstruction was a success because the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were created. The 13th amendment(Doc. A) was a success because it ended slavery officially. No man could be controlled or owned by another. This helped many former slaves, yet caused trouble for them. The Ku Klux Klan was a group of white southerners that opposed African Americans and used fear tactics to force them to leave, or they killed them. However, once African American was able to get to the North, they were safe. They could get a job and receive pay. Next, the 14th amendment(Doc.A) gave anyone born into the United States full citizenship. They would be protected by the laws and given rights. This was important because they would be protected by any laws of any other white person, which was a step in the direction of equality. Finally, the 15th amendment(Doc. A) allowed African Americans to vote. This was important because the African Americans would be able to choose who they wanted for president. They would have a say in the election, which is something they never got before. They have the ability and right to choose the most equal president who supports them and tries to help
After the Civil War, there was a lot of rebuilding and reconstruction to be done but, nothing ever got accomplished. Personally, I think the North is at fault for the failure of reconstruction in the South because, they were concerned about blacks being a part of the government. Also, they were concerned the problems going on in their own government. Northerner’s were supposed to support the reconstruction of the South. And, they didn’t follow through with what they said they were going to do to help. So, here’s why the North is at fault.
William Smith Smith AP U.S. History – 7 3 January 2015 Essential Questions 1. The most prominent reason why Reconstruction was considered a failure was the status of African Americans after reconstruction was already over. The agreements following the Civil War were made in order to make African Americans equal in the eyes of the law and the opportunities they were able to pursue. But after the war the southern states were widely ignored as they passed laws to segregate the races and prevent blacks from voting. They remained very low on social tiers as well, and very little people in the south changed the way they treat black people.
After the Union claimed victory in the Civil War, America underwent the Reconstruction Era that lasted between 1865 to 1877. This was a time period where the government set conditions that would permit the defiant Southern states once again into the Union and abide by American Government. The “10 percent” plan was part of Abraham Lincolns Reconstruction plan established in 1864, used to rejoin the Southern States back to the Union which Johnson later vetoed because he believed it meant injustice to the Southern States. In 1865, the Freedmen's Bureau was presented in Congress and was made to care for liberated slaves and additionally evacuees and surrendered the land. Congress passed the Civil Rights Act which gave blacks full citizenship and
What was the Reconstruction era? The Reconstruction era happened twelve years after the Civil War. This era was an attempt to increase freedom for the slaves, however, there was great resistance to this movement. Finally, after many attempts to reconstruct the South, the movement ended; leaving only whites-only in the government. Now the question stands, who killed the Reconstruction? The South had many attempts to reconstruct itself but many people resisted the movement. While the North just kinda let it happen.
Reconstruction was a period between 1865-1877 that took place after the states separated. During the reconstruction there were times it was successful and many times it failed. The main goal was to reconstruct the nation and turn it into one nation. Reconstruction had a huge impact on the south’s government, society and economy.
After the American Civil War ended in 1865, Americans enter in to a period call the reconstruction. During, which the country enters a rebuilding process. It is a rebuilding not only of a war torn county repairing itself from the destruction of war, but also a rebuilding of American mindset and political thinking. One of the positive results of the Civil War is the end of slavery. At the current time this was radical idea that made the country rethink and examine some of its core beliefs.
The American Civil War ended in 1865 which resulted in victory for the Union and the disbanding of the Confederacy. The aftermath of the war ushered in major political and social reforms in attempt to prevent the Civil War from happening ever again. The Reconstruction Era (1865-1877) began immediately after the war, then it was followed by the Gilded Age (1877 –1897), and at the turn of the century was the Progressive Era (1897–1920). These three significant time periods in American history introduced major changes to civil rights, industrialization, and foreign policy during the forty-five years following the Civil War. However, change was not always good. Some sought to take advantage of the shifting of tides and benefit from
Reconstruction was a time period of major change in the United States of America for both African Americans and White citizens. After the Civil War, the reconstruction process started out as a failure, but over the years turned into a huge success because of how African Americans were able to live normal lives. Overall, Reconstruction was a success because freedom and growth of equality for African Americans was increased greatly.
The Reconstruction era was necessary for rebuilding the south. It was a success in some aspects and failure in others. The main purpose of the reconstruction was almost fulfilled, but it didn't stay after the reconstruction. Its aftermath was terrible in some aspects especially for african americans.
The Reconstruction Era lasted up to 1877 from the time just after the Civil War. The Reconstruction failed to bring about social and economic equality to the former slaves due to the southern whites’ resentful and bitter outlook on the matter, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Jim Crow laws.
It was clear to people in the late 1800s that the Civil War caused many national problems along with problems within the union. However, the Civil War assuaged many problems for the country. For example, slavery was abolished, the supremacy of the national government had been confirmed, and secession had been proved false. Some people may believe that the main reason why the congress’ reconstruction efforts to ensure equal rights to the freedmen failed was because virtually no one in America thought blacks were equal to whites. Basically it was because people still have racial thoughts; slaves didn’t get to fully acquire the meaning and prerogatives of their rights; in other words they were uneducated.
History helps shape the future and what we can learn from it to make sure that we do not repeat the same mistakes. During Reconstruction, the country was trying to make amends after the war was over. The country needed to find a way to mend a broken nation because it was divided. The main issue during reconstruction was the status of African Americans because they wanted their civil rights, but could not get that. The question that needs to be answered is: who did the most to aid the cause of African American during Reconstruction, and why? Many organizations and people helped African Americans, but the Freedman’s Bureau did the most.
The reconstruction of America would decide how the south would rejoin the Union, what was to become of the nearly 3 million black slaves freed, how America was going to recover from such a devastating internal war. There appears to be phases that the Reconstruction Era went through, roughly three of them. The first is that of the Presidential Reconstruction, it lead to a more radical Republican party. After such we find ourselves in what was to be known as the Radical Reconstruction. A period where the blacks found their voices being heard. Finally we lead up to the end of the Reconstruction-era. It is said that the reconstruction lasted from 1865 to 1877, however it can be said that, to this very day, some reconstruction is still ongoing.
American Reconstruction began in 1865 at the end of the civil war. The period's main focus was to rebuild the country after war by enacting and changing many key pieces of legislature in the American government. One divisive factor that needed to be addressed was how much representation African Americans deserved in America. During the reconstruction period, African American rights were extended through various new amendments and working opportunities, however, these rights did not last long as they were undermined by black codes and sharecropping.
