Where it all began

What is fair trade? Where did it start? Who started it and why? Believe it or not, fair trade has been around for a long time. Fair trade is the practice of directly benefiting producers in the developing world by buying straight from them at a guaranteed price. (thefreedictionary.com) Most items that we buy are not made in the U.S, their made in different countries and most of the time the producers are getting ripped off. Talking about fair trade for today isn’t the vocal point of this essay. Let’s go back in time and see how fair trade got started and how it spread throughout the world. Later in 1997 the members of The Fairtrade Labeling Organizations International encouraged other countries to only buy products with the Fairtrade mark on them. They wanted this so that the products could be traced back through the supply chain to the producer, and that at every stage it has been bought and sold in compliance with the Fairtrade specific standards. (Fair-Trade) This helps to make sure that the items were fairly passed through the cycle. Fair trade is an attempt to re-empower the poor producer. These producers are less empowered due to the economic system, in which the retail companies are under pressure to seek larger and larger profits. An while this is happening the poor producers are losing their land and livelihoods because of the decrease in money they receive for the consumers. Also in 1997 coffee became widely available to the catering trade and a campaign is launched to target restaurants and institutions. (Fair trade US) As we break into the year 2000 Fair trade has become extremely popular in all the countries around the world. In January, the first Fair trade bananas with the actual FAIRTRADE mark on them were distributed in over 1,000 stores and supermarkets. (Fair trade US) In October, Fair Trade chocolate bar Dubble with added Comic Relief was launched, with an award winning education pack taking Fair Trade in 15,000 UK schools.
