Employment relationship is the legal link between employers and employees (Organization, 2016). There is an economic exchange between the employer and employee as they perform the work and services, with certain conditions (Corporation, 2012). A power relationship on the other hand is when the employee agrees to submit to the authority and direction of the employer. The employment relationship is a continuous and open-ended contract, it allows the employees to modify and restrict the work effort and can combine collectively to challenge managerial authority. Therefore, the relationship is interdependent in nature, as employers seek a cooperative relationship with employees to gain their consent to instructions. Therefore, give a rise to industrial relations systems; this is the rules, regulations and institutions that govern the employment relationship. The Fair Work Act 2009 covers the private sector employees and the State public sector employee which are covered in the Australian government. The Fair Work Act 2009 legislates for 10 minimum conditions to be known as the National Employment Standard. It has minimum wages set and requires on negotiating parties to bargain in good faith. These set standards are used as guidelines for employees and employers. When there is a dispute they must comply the government and their laws (Alan Nankervis, 2014). There are three approaches to industrial relations. Unitarist, an advocate of a unitary system of government. It is a more flexible approach, with less laws and law choice.
