Review Healthy People 2020. Identify objectives that are amenable to parish nurse intervention. Describe how faith communities can contribute to the accomplishment of these national health objectives and accomplish the goal of improving the health of the public. How can nurses working in the community form partnerships with parish nurses and faith communities? How would such partnerships be beneficial?
Health and healing are important factors in faith communities. This is because these communities connect spiritual and physical wellbeing together. Internationally there are over ten thousand parish nurses in the world, which is a significant increase from the six congregations that began in 1984. Dr. Westberg is responsible for founding parish nursing in Chicago where he was also a chaplain. He made the connection between clergies working in Holistic Health Centers and physicians.
Parish nursing provides nurses with an opportunity to practice within faith communities. Parish nurses a have a key role in faith communities for both health and ministerial purposes. These individuals provide assessment, evaluation, diagnosis, implementation and planning for all individuals in a parish community (“What is Faith-Community Nursing?”, n.d). In essence, a parish nurse makes an integration of spirituality and different aspects of healthcare.
