Banning or challenging is an attempt to remove a book from the public because of content, or because of objections made by a group or individual. Reasons books are banned or challenged are: homosexuality, “new age”, philosophies, “politicly incorrect”, profanity, racist/sexist language, sex, sex education, violence, witchcraft, etc… (Mullally). Challenged in Arlington junior high school in Texas, 2001 for having too strong of content, and for being not suitable for younger students, challenged on the Danbury middle school reading list in Ohio in 2014, challenged on the accelerated reading list at Chinquapin elementary in North Carolina, 2009, challenged in Coeur D’Alene (ID) school district in 2008, challenged on the NorthWest Suburban HS district 214 reading list in Arlington Heights in Illinois …show more content…

Another example in which the book is challenged is racism here are some examples: “What you call me?” “What the fuck’s a cootie?” “That’s like calling me a nigger,” “Is that a racial thing?”(Fallen Angels 91-92). Lastly sexual references are used throughout the book, these examples include: “Say, ‘Dear Two-Timing Slut.’ ”(Fallen Angels 92), “The next time I join a war I’m going to get circumcised first,”(Fallen Angels 95), Me and Peewee spent all day talking about weather we should try to have sex with a Vietnamese girl before we got back to the States.
