“Money and Fame”; A Brief Analysis of the Controversial Definition of Heroism In Inevitable Tragedies “The devil is present in the mine, taking form in all the greed, the misunderstanding, the envy, and the betrayals among the men. He believes that the devil has come from the surface, attaching himself to those letters, the offers of money and fame, to pit them against one another” (Hector Tobar). Tragedies occur every day, unexpectedly, to ordinary men, women, and children that had no control over the circumstance. On August 5th, 2010 one of the most tragic mining catastrophes occurred; sweeping international news as thirty-three men were held captive for sixty-nine days in the depths of the San Jose Mine located in the Atacama Desert in Chile. In Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and novelist Hector Tobar’s novel “Deep Down Dark” readers embark on a riveting and catastrophic journey through the eyes of the miners as they struggle to sustain themselves in grueling and insufficient living conditions. The media including commendable broadcasters such as CNN and Fox news published a multitude of articles following the miners’ journeys from penny-pinching unskilled laborers to national heroes. “President Sebastian Pinera states, “you are not the same, and this country is not the same after this.
