Moving from one culture to another can be quite overwhelming for some families. Being use to one way of living can affect how some families adapt to new cultures or social classes. There are numerous influences on families when they are exposed to different environments. The traditions and beliefs people believe in can be affected by the influences of a new environment. Experiencing a new culture has positive and negative influences on families through their beliefs, lifestyles, and living environments. Living in different environments within cultures there are many influences on the type of lifestyle someone leads. Her middle class job has different social networks than her past lower class jobs. Keller (2005) writes, “She tried hanging out with the nurses from work. But some were bourgeois and uppity, had a sense of comfort and confidence she did not possess” (p.217). In her case she has a hard time relating with or feeling comfortable around her new colleagues. She may feel overwhelmed, undermined, or nervous about the differences in the social networks.
Her sons are also affected by the living environment differences in cultures. One of her sons grew up in a violent, gang, and drug affiliated neighborhood. He eventually started doing the same type of activities he was living around. Her other son grew up in a middle class neighborhood and was involved in extra curricula activities. He is doing excellent in school and is working toward having a career. The two different environments differ between a positive future and a negative future. It is amazing how living or social environments can influences families lifestyles in positive and negative ways. Immigrants are usually affected by moving to America and experiencing a different culture. There are numerous sacrifices immigrants make on a daily basis in order to live in America. Picking up and moving from one country to another could potentially overwhelm someone. Living in an environment that is new and different is a big change
Day 2: How does your culture contribute to the way that you interact with your social world? Culture is one of the primary reasons we act the way we do. There are many types of cultures like professional, national, religious, family, and educational. Your family culture is the number one type of culture that affects you in your adult life. It shapes the foods you enjoy, the activities you like to participate in, and specific belief systems you take part in. Additionally,
The United States of America is a nation of many immigrant people. People come from all over the world, leaving their homeland and sometimes leaving their loved ones to escape deep poverty and violence. When immigrants come to America, in their dreamland they face many problems such as language, education, employment, legal problems, housing, food, and health issues. Immigrants do all kinds of low-paying jobs. They clean houses for a living. Some immigrants come with very small businesses. Many immigrants contribute their skills, knowledge, and education to improve the U.S. economy.
Since its founding, the United States has attracted immigrants from all over the world and consists of a variety of different cultures. Immigration has had an enormous impact on American society and economy and shaped the country remarkably.
The issue of immigration has become a major debate for everyone. Although people argue over the negative impacts of immigrants living in America such as overcrowding, less jobs due to immigrants taking them, drug trafficking, and threatening of American culture, immigrants still have a huge impact in the American society. The United States is by far the largest destination for immigrants, annually receiving over a million legal immigrants and about seven hundred thousand illegal immigrants. Many people come to the United States to get a better life for themselves as well as for the education system for their children.
People have different culture backgrounds which are very special to them. Usually families’ tradition and thoughts are affected by their cultural backgrounds. Environment is one of the most important factors in a human’s development. When the term "environment" is used, it refers to factors such as family and cultural tie. In today's society, each individual is living his or her life in different a way than others.' Individual’s life choice is generally controlled, learned, influenced, and raised by the cultural background. “Two kinds’ by Amy Tan and “The Red Convertible” by Louise Erdrich reveal how family is important and precious in culture.
Immigrants did not have a lot of trouble assimilating to America, but there was resentment towards them in and after the years of the American Revolution. They did not have issues marrying into American families or getting jobs. English merchants were relocated during the war of 1812, and Americans forced new immigrants to register with the local government.
An immigrant that is coming to the United States has the emotion and perception that draws to a country of opportunities; that will live in a country that will be friendly. However, most of the time, immigrant do not know that they are coming to live in a different culture, and because of that, they need to experience and adjustment in many ways, and an adjustment that will help them to do many things with confidence.
Many came from eastern and southern Europe such as the Irish, Germans, Italians and Polish. Immigrants came to America with hopes and dreams of prosperity, freedom of religion, freedom from fascism and dictatorship with the possibility of wealth and security. Many if not all of the immigrants encountered the complete opposite. Hard labor, poor living condition, low wages and illnesses were the problems often faced by the
The changing environments throughout the ages have caused the movement of thousands of families out of their homelands. Whether forced to make such decisions or doing so by their own desires, all immigrants have had to survive the physical and psychological challenges encountered along the way. To speak about the experiences of all these different people using the same ideas and examples would be quite inaccurate. They all, however, had to live through similar situations and deal with similar problems. Many of them succeeded and found the better future they were looking for. Many others found only hardship and experienced the destruction of their hopes and dreams. All of them were transformed.
Another major hardship that was faced by most immigrants was the way that they were treated. Often times they were treated like second-class citizens and were thought to be inferior to the natural born citizens. They also seemed to only be able to hold jobs that no one else really wanted to do, for very low wages. Most of the time people would
Family environment and background has a huge effect on a child’s development. If a child lives within a happy, healthy and stimulating environment where good relationships are formed then it is unlikely that there will be any developmental issues and children will go on to thrive. A lot depends on how many are in the family, the housing and area in which they live, what facilities there are locally, whether parents work or are workless.
Living with a different culture to our roots can lead to changes in our lives. Migrating to
Cultural practices cause some problems for families because their way of living or morals may not be accepted. Some immigrants relocate to North America for employment; however immigrants want to share their beliefs with their families. Families want to continue to practice their religion, eat the same food, and discipline their children according to their culture.
The difficulty of moving to a new culture is that a lot of people would feel fear because they are so use to their own culture, so now they leave what they are used to a new way and it will be hard for them to adapt. Some may like the new food and the pace of life, then later on in the month’s people may feel like the new life and culture is unpleasant life for instance: public hygiene, the language barriers, traffic safety, and food accessibility. Still the most part in relocating to a different culture is the communication because they might not understand the language or might say the wrong word thinking it means the same in the other countries. People adjusting to a new culture often feel lonely and homesick because they are not yet
The second effect of immigration is traditions. America is a big developed country. It has a lot of traditions that are different from other countries. America has a lot of fast food, such as hamburger, pizza, sandwich. People need to eat those food almost every day. If they do not want to eat fast food, they should have to cook by themselves. In China, rice is the most important food supply. People need to eat rice every day. America not only has a lot of fast food, but also has many holidays. Christmas is the biggest holiday. Schools have a long Christmas vacation. On Christmas day, every family get together with friends. In China, people do not celebrate Christmas, they have lunar New Year. Lunar New Year is the biggest festival in China.
