Prior to the appointment it would be best to ensure you have enough chairs for the patient and his family in the sound booth or office. It is important to take a family centered approach to care and engage his family but be careful to not ignore the patient. Before beginning your testing it would be a good idea to assess the patient’s cognitive state and abilities. This could be done during case history questions would be directed towards the patient. His responses would you a better idea of his impairment and current state. A good indicator would be to listen to the mean length of utterances. The family may also be a good resource to support you in your decision making. You may want to ask what communication strategies are being used already.
