Prior to beginning this class, I had pretty clear understanding of what it meant to be in a relationship with my significant other and my family. I am not saying that I was perfect, but I do believe that having good reasoning and being able to make sound choices have helped me pave the way. What I learned in this class helped me solidify what I know to be true about relationships; it takes two to maintain a happy and healthy relationship.
Marriage in my opinion is the most prominent relationship one can have as it requires commitment and skillful handling. On a more intimate level, the communication between my husband and I has definitely improved. Without being too obvious, I began to apply some of the key points we covered in the power-point presentation about communication and I noticed that we are both giving each other our undivided attention when discussing an issue. In addition to communication, other essentials for a healthy marriage are love, trust, loyalty and

I am not one to jump the gun and say “let’s have a family” without taking into account the many expenses that are required to raise a family. Although we are currently not living at the poverty level, it would only be a matter of when, not if, unless we plan accordingly early on.
The last topic I found meaningful was the subject of infidelity. According to Lewandoski, “cheating damages relationships and undermines many of the positive reasons why a person likely entered the relationship in the first place.” One of the main reasons for infidelity in marriages is due to gaps in communication. Practicing what I have learned in this class will help me personally avoid falling in such trap. I cannot say that it can never happen to me because it can. That is why striving to cultivate a close and warm relationship with my husband is crucial to the nourishment of our
Marriage is an adjustment between two people getting married Communication can cause a relationship to succeed or fail. If you do not share how you feel, it can cause your partner to withdraw. Listening can save a relationship. Schonberg (2011) found that “affective affirmation –basically, behavior that makes your partner feel loved cared for or special plays a role in a happy marriage and those men need it more than women. There are several factors and problems that can cause marriage to either succeed or fail. It is important to discuss problem things left unsaid can cause your partner to with draw.

As we know families as always changing and so are the dynamics. Communication is a transactional process that is changing over time. Two central scopes of family behavior are adaptability and cohesion. Each is divided into four levels to create 16 combinations. Overtime it has changed to fit into cohesion, adaptability and communication.
The ways in which a family communicates messages with each other plays a key role in shaping the lives of each individual family member. Humans have always belonged to and identified with their families even before they could speak or form any other social group. Family members not only rely on each other to be there for emotional and social support, but also shape how individuals identify themselves. Therefore, the quality of family relationships greatly impacts the quality of life for most people. (Koerner & Schrodt, 2014)
I wanted to join the class because I am considering being a marriage and family therapist in the future. I definitely learned a lot from this class about the models and theories. I found structural family therapy the most interesting out of all the therapies. I also thought structural family therapy would be very beneficial in my job as a child protective service worker. Having an understanding of the family, their structure, and what problems there maybe is great for this job. Of course, most of my structural mapping is doing to deal with substance abuse in a subsystem. I am also a visual and hands on learner, and being able to see something physically works best for me.
They serve as a framework for clinical assessment and can be applied to the individual, family, and community. Through this framework, data is collected and assessed, allowing for the application of nursing diagnoses and interventions that encompass a holistic view of the client. There are 11 patterns, and within each pattern there are four focal areas.
While reading The Family Crucible, the authors made it feel like I was watching a life-time television series. There were several high points and low points during the family therapy session that left me unsure of how the show would end. This book takes you on a journey using family counseling to help a family heal and communicate better with one another. I thought it was interesting how this systematic therapy took place in a time where therapy was looked at as taboo. Many times in that era family therapy was not an option. The main focus was on the family member with the issue and not on the parents or other family members. In the book the authors used different theories and approaches during the counseling sessions which were quite interesting. This process after time enabled the family to look at the journey they were on in order to understand how the family, as a whole, should function.
Communication meets relation needs as well. Even though people need the physical need, they need to feel affection, and have relationships. But without communication, how would it be possible to maintain a relationship? Having that communication builds the relationship. As Floyd states, some scholars believe that people’s need for a relationship is so basic, they hardly get by by without them. These are how communication contributes to physical health and
The Family Crucible is a story about the Brice family who is recommended by Claudia’s psychiatrist to go to family therapy due to the fact that she has not been making any progress in individual psychotherapy. The Brice family comes in to meet with Dr. Carl Whitaker and Dr. Augustus Napier, who co-facilitate family therapy throughout the entirety of the book.
Communications Theory is a therapeutic modality that can be used as an intervention in family therapy settings. Developed by the well-respected family therapist, Virginia Satir, the concepts and techniques behind Communications Theory have earned much respect amongst therapists worldwide. Satir focused on the importance of establishing and maintaining clear channels of communication to improve the lives of families who struggle with myriad challenges. She believed that families needed to be given ways to see hope more clearly. She also professed that the presenting problems may not be as important as the way in which people cope with the problems. More clearly, her focus was more on helping people gain hope through better communications skills which lead to more effective coping mechanisms (…).
When learning about communications , we learn that many people (or subjects) are part of similar or different social community. Even family and friends could be in a different social community than you. However, the real question is how does this affect communication between both parties. In studying and understanding the communication process, I have learned that when we differ in information or knowledge of others cultural values or beliefs we gain a sense of uncertainty. In the uncertainty reduction theory, increased knowledge of what kind of person another is that provides an improved forecast of how a future interaction will turn out. We learn more about the world through other cultures and their beliefs .
After reading chapter one it made me take a direct look at my parenting , communication with my children . I am single mom of three wonderful girls who mean the world to me. While raising children can be a joyful exciting time I find discipline to be a grey area in my life . Mainly due to the fact I have a child with triple chromosome syndrome who suffers from behavioral issues . As I read the passages I instantly begin to question the direct outcome that my parenting will have on their adulthood life . The passages lead to many questions on how to maintain a humanistic approcach to parenting that wont have my children feeling smothered with discipline . But in fact
After a thorough review of the textbook and the course material, the specific family system approach that I choose to explore is the Bowenian Approach for this literature review. This specific family system approach is also known as the Bowen Family System Theory as well (D.V. Papero, 2006). The Bowen Family System Theory was established by Murray Bowen, a theorist and psychiatrist who specialized in treating children who were deranged and had schizophrenia (Rockwell, 2010). In the 1950s, Bowen wanted to explore a new venture so he decided that he wanted all of the family members of each child to be involved in an therapeutic process at the same time (Rockwell, 2010).
