The Aspects of Family in Shakespeare, Pope and Elliot
I attest that I have not received any help in the composition of this essay, and that the work is entirely my own, Colby Davis What is family? It is defined as “a group of people related to one another by blood or marriage.” Three acclaimed authors: Shakespeare, Pope and Eliot, identify family in many different ways, some that are similar and some that are different from each other. To clearly understand how they all variously define family you need to dive deep into the context of their works. A couple of the authors use a textbook example of family and others create their own idea of the concept.
In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, family is one of the major themes throughout the play. In Hamlet, familial relationships commonly took part in violence against one another. The family drama is started with Prince Hamlet who has a problem with his new stepfather, King Claudius. They barely even had a relationship to start with and Hamlet resents him once he takes the throne of his deceased father. Hamlet is very keen to say how he does not like the idea of his father’s throne being taken. He doesn’t think Claudius can handle his father’s job and is concerned about how quickly the throne was given to someone new.
