“Family Literacy is about reading and so much more” (“Connecticut Family Literacy Initiative,” n.d.). Because I feel that students will be to relate to this topic, I would use the menu planning, label reading and/or grocery shopping list in the classroom. This can be something that the child’s family would be able to help them with while giving them a literacy activity to work on together. In the class, the students would be able to discuss the foods they buy, the food they eat, and read food labels.
On the other side, there are people who believe that homeschooling is good for children because it allows parents to spend more time with their kids. In the article “Homeschooling is Good for families,” the author talks about how they took their kids and traveled all over to teach their kids about geography (Brown). They talked about how they had spent 3 months in Australia to learn not only about geography but geology, flora, fauna and literature (Brown). They are spending more time with family traveling and learning new things from experience. If they were in school they wouldn’t be able to travel, but instead they would be sitting in the class room seeing pictures, verses experiencing it first hand. If both parents work, it is hard for them
Even though the large majority of my family hasn't graduated college, education has always been one of the cornerstone values in my household. From a young age my parents and especially my grandparents who grew up in extreme poverty stress the importance of taking advantage of all educational opportunities presented to me. They understand the doors having an education can open. In this respect, my family has helped me prepare for this program as they provide an amazing support system for me and an incentive to do well. Outside of my family, my teachers and debate coach have always encouraged me to give 100%. I'll be the first to admit this doesn't always happen, but I'm very good keeping myself honest and accountable with my school work and
The purpose of this reflection paper is portray the knowledge that I have learned throughout this semester regarding the multisystem utilized to identify traits and behaviors associated with the assessments of family members. Marta Lundy’s article gave a brief history of theoretical integration as she describe a multi-systemic, multi-theoretical integrative model for social work practice, even though each reading assignment was associated with a movie or a book provided by the instructor and required all students to provide a written analysis.
The first time I saw Jeff Griffiths, founder and Executive Director of HandsOn Northeast Ohio (NEO), he was a guest speaker at a Staff Advisory Council meeting at Case Western Reserve University. His enthusiasm and change the world attitude was contagious, and by the end of his address I felt I could fix every woe in the world. The first time I met Jeff was on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at their Cuyahoga County office on Superior Avenue. He was as energetic, articulate and passionate in person as he was when he presented to our council.
Social institutions can be defined as “a system of behavioral and relationship patterns…they order and structure the behavior of individuals by means of their normative character. ” These social institutions shape the understanding and, sometimes, personalities of the various people in society. Two of the major social institutions are the family, and education. Before reading the chapters on these two institutions, I did not realize how big of an effect each of them actually plays on the lives of everyone, including myself. These institutions not only have an effect on the outcome of the lives of people in society but they also have major effects on the gender differences and inequalities evident in our culture. Family and education are
A long time ago, in a village beside the broad sea, there lived a family owning a pet snake named Orro. Orro’s family loved him very much and gave him goods that a normal snake could only dream of. He was taken care of well. At first, Orro just wanted food and a place to sleep and live. That’s what the family gave him. After, he decided that he wanted more food for he was growing bigger, and that’s what the family gave him. Finally, he decided he wanted a bigger place to himself, and so the family gave him the freedom of roaming the backyard. For Orro, he decided that he could have everything he wanted and grew a little arrogant. The family was okay with it for a while. But one day, Orro requested to extend his living quarters, but the
