Family nurse practitioners are in excellent positions to help improve health and wellness on a daily and regular basis. The long term connection a FNP can make with patients and the level of care he/she can provide is both beneficial and rewarding to the patient. The knowledge and skill level required to provide care for patients across their life span is beyond admirable. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to be that provider and to advocate for patients on a much higher level than that as a registered nurse. I am so very eager to expand my knowledge and skills in order to provide that higher level of care. My goal is to learn and experience as much as I can from some of the very best teachers/nurses so that I can provide holistic, detailed, …show more content…
I have shown leadership in roles such as being voted as senior class secretary in high school and also as secretary in my undergrad Nursing Student Association. These roles demand additional time, effort and responsibility in conjunction to being a student. As secretary of NSA, I was a member of a team. We scheduled meetings, set up fundraising activities, found speakers for our meetings, and ensured that our chapter was abiding by all laws. At times, this responsibility in addition to school was overwhelming but I am extremely organized and am able to cope well in intense situations. As a certified pharmacy technician for 4 years, I have been in many tense situations with patients and have had to quickly problem solve. I have encountered upset patients, confused patients, and patients with little pharmacological or healthcare knowledge. I have always been an advocate for these patients to ensure their understanding of what is going on, what medications they are taking, and their next steps in their care. Coming from a low socioeconomic class, I understand that the cost of healthcare is a key factor in patients adhering to recommended therapies. There has been many times where I have called a doctor to change to a cheaper medication in the same drug class as the prescribed medication. Small actions such as this make a huge difference in a patient’s life, wellness, and also their outlook on the healthcare system as a whole. When …show more content…
My experience as a hostess/greeter at olive garden, a pharmacy technician, and also as a registered nurse has greatly improved my communication skills and my ability to build trust with a patient in a matter of minutes. Sincere care and understanding are pertinent when building a relationship. I understand that, in hospital settings especially, listening is key in communication. One of my weaknesses is staying in the patient’s room too long just being the ear they need. However, the veterans I work with are so grateful for this level of personal interaction. They come from different cultures, religions, and backgrounds, each with their own share of personal issues. Sometimes a listener is all they need; I will always be a shoulder they can cry on. That is the beauty of nursing! I am also able to communicate with people of all ages. An elementary school teacher in a lower socioeconomic school district asked me to come speak to a group of students. She knew of the one parent and four children home that I had come from and wanted me to speak to them about possibilities. My father worked from 6am to about 6pm at least six days per week to provide for myself and my three younger brothers. This increased the responsibility placed on me and I had to serve as a caretaker for my brothers as well as myself. Through all of the obstacles I still graduated high school in the top five percent of my class of 534 and
For this assignment, I had the opportunity to interview Samantha Hage De Reyes, family nurse practitioner, currently working at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) Health Center in Riverside, CA. Family nurse practitioners are described as health professionals with analytic skills for evaluating and providing evidence-based, patient-centered care across settings, and advanced knowledge of the health care delivery system (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy & O’Grady, 2014). My objective was to ask a series of questions pertaining to the role of a family nurse practitioner, challenges concerning this nursing role, opinions regarding the future of family nurse practitioners, and more. This interview was conducted over the phone, and it was a valuable opportunity to learn more about what it means to be a family nurse practitioner and to start thinking about what I want to achieve in my own
As the health care system continues to change and the population of patient with chronic conditions transforms in the health care industry, the leaders of nursing much be able to adapt and change as well. Advance practice nurses are on the forefront and leaders of the patient health care. In addition to the challenges being faced with the current Affordable Health Care Act, the advance practice nurse must be willing to lead and take a stand for the betterment of the patient overall health and condition. As this writer reflects on the personal strengths, positivity, self-assurance, and relator are personality traits needed as an advance practice nurse. In the personal strength positivity, there is encouragement with individuals to believe within themselves and attempts to pull out their inner strength. This personal strength can be utilized with patients who are struggling to lose weight or being newly diagnosed with an illness, This writer can encourage the patient to believe within themselves and help create health care plans to assist the patient with changing their lifestyle.
There are many professional practice issues that impact the role of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). This occupation is continually changing and developing. There has been a recent increase in the demand for healthcare services. The growing shortage of primary healthcare providers has led to the need to utilize advanced practice nurses to fill in the gap in areas previously occupied by physicians. This has led to many issues impacting the profession including education, stress and burnout, and changing roles/scope of practice for the profession.
In my current role, I oversee one hundred forty to one hundred sixty patients. I have made it a practice to make a clinical coordination note any time I speak to patients, families, or if I need to return a message about a patient that I need to follow up. I plan to continue this practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) therefore I would go to the patient’s medical record to see if I had made any notes on this patient’s chart. I would also review my other patient charts to make sure this has not happened before. If there was no documentation was noted in the patient's chart, I would take my concerns about Stephanie to the physician of the practice.
It is going to be redesign in 2017. The purpose of redesign is to improve quality of chronic care patient. It will improve quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of patient care. Also reducing cost and better satisfaction to the patient as well as the family.
My name is Leonardo Mastache, of Cuban origins, and I have been a nurse for exactly ten years. Most of my work have been in medical surgical and telemetry. About eight years ago I relocated from the crowded city of Miami to Naples, Florida, which I find to be a pleasant place to live in. Here I work at Naples Community Hospital (NCH), and recently transferred to an oncology unit to gain some understanding of how to work with patients that have been diagnosed with different types of cancer.
The specialty area selected by this author among the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) roles was that of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). High among the list of reasons for choosing the FNP specialty track was the ability to care for patients who lack healthcare insurance, are of limited financial resources, or are stigmatized. The type of organization that would allow me to provide high-quality, patient-centered care in a manner consistent with my professional aspirations would be a Primary Care Organization (PCO). Being part of a PCO would allow me to implement clinical skills that are distinctive of the care provided by the FNP, such as to educate patients regarding management of chronic conditions as well as counseling on disease prevention and health promotion strategies. These skills would be provided in addition to the well-established responsibilities shared with other healthcare providers; such as performing examinations, making diagnoses, prescribing medications
My experience and skills are surpassed only by my enthusiasm to effectively meet the challenges before me. I am a highly capable, motivated, and energetic individual that enjoys working with others towards successful solutions. My leadership style incorporates motivation through positive feedback and support plus straightforwardness and open communication that builds trust and loyalty among my peers and patients alike. Throughout my personal experiences, education, and athletic career I have honed the ability to be a leader in times where others look for leadership. Leadership is not given; a confident, competent, and motivated individual takes leadership of a situation.
Timing is everything! Personally, it is time to accomplish a career goal of becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner. With that being said, many factors contributing to a successful outcome must be right. Until this past year, they have not all lined up at once. Now, the timing, desire, availability, health and family life are in balance. Additionally, there is a great need for Advanced Practitioners. Complex health issues are on the rise and Primary Care Physicians are on the decline. (I think need a transitional sentence)
Health care is a fundamental element to sustaining the welfare of our society. The ability to become a student in the Grand Canyon University (GCU), Master of Science in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program, takes me one step closer to being able to achieve my dream of playing a vital role in helping our society towards disease prevention. My experience in the acute care setting has reinforced my passion in disease prevention and health preservation. My short term goal is to be able to successfully complete the required course work. Secondly, I want to be able to acquire the necessary certifications to be able to practice as a FNP. The program at GCU will provide me with the knowledge, and skills I will need to effectively develop my role. The long term goal I have set for myself is to reach the Doctorate level degree at some point in my career. I would like to practice at an independent level and have my own practice in
Dear LMU MSN Admissions Committee: Family Nurse Practitioner Personal Statement Becoming a Nurse Practitioner through Lincoln Memorial University will provide a lifelong career that has meaning and value to me. My most important role as a nurse practitioner will be patient advocate. My approach to medicine will be to look at things from a patient’s point of view and then apply my medical knowledge to it to discern different treatment options. I want to strive to perform sound medicine while keeping an open mind in regard to new or different approaches that are ever-emerging. My goal will be to help patients navigate through the ups and downs of life while offering an attentive ear, a compassionate heart, and a knowledgeable mind.
This paper will discuss and provide information about the role of a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in a physician’s clinic within a rural area. Due to the increased demand for primary care providers, it is important to discuss the FNP role within the healthcare system. The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates a shortage of 46,000 primary care physicians by the year 2025 (AAMC, 2015). The increased provider shortage and gaps within the rural areas provide a promising future for FNPs with the ability to provide primary care for the underserved. In America’s ever changing healthcare industry, FNPs are working in rural clinics across the nation in order for patients to have access to high-quality, cost-effective care.
As an indigent midwife’s daughter, I have gone, sometimes all day to help my mother deliver limited care. I experienced uncertainties, challenges and hard work similar to that faced by the nurse practitioners today. I am well prepared to undertake FNP through my hands on experience in hospitals jobs and shadowing as well as my graduate and University and undergraduate work at California States. I am looking forward to taking courses such as Family Centered Practice NSng, Health Protection, promotion & screening, and advanced pharmacology. I am interested in outpatient unit and community and inpatient unit in particular because these areas will provide an opportunity for me to work in cross cultural, varied of settings involving people of all ages. In addition, I would like to deepen my knowledge of contemporary health care and ethical issues that commonly arise in the nurse practitioner
Nursing can be a demanding career, but the benefits far much outweigh the challenges. Most importantly, it’s the rewards it offers by allowing an opportunity to make a difference in another person’s life through the provision of care when they need it. Just as Patricia Benner theorized in her book “Novice to Expert,” nursing encompasses both educational knowledge and extensive clinical experience acquired throughout one’s career. This far, I continue to acquire knowledge and clinical knowhow which will promote proper and efficient care to patients. Since I began practicing one year ago in a long-term healthcare facility, I have interacted with patients, families, physicians and other members of the healthcare team to coordinate patient’s care which has enabled me to gain confidence in myself. While I cannot deny that it was difficult to transition from a student to a licensed nurse, I learnt to overcome these challenges and focus on my strengths. Practicing as an LPN has provided a platform to learn and gain experience even though the duties and responsibilities are limited by the scope of practice.
Developing long-term relationships with patients is what I’m looking forward to as a Family Physician. Through my experiences as a medical student, intern, hospital volunteer, and observer, my most enjoyable moments are those spent listening to the patient. I have learned that communication, empathy and good listening skills, attributes
