The nursing homes also provide opening hours for resident’s family and friends to come and visit them which prevents social exclusion and isolation. Family and friends can be a vital part of the resident’s emotional and social development.

The first person or people who should be caring the burden for elderly care lies within their own family. Within the American culture many family members prefer to put their older members in elder homes. My family is originally from Mexico so I am aware of the family values embedded within Mexican culture. I have never seen a Mexican family have their elderly family members live or be taking care of by somebody else that is not a relative. We live in an American society that does not value the care and need for the elderly and prefer to leave up to state and national departments. Since they were the ones who created the generation in which we live in we should be grateful and provide them with the best care possible within our own homes. Many elders who live in homes receive poor or abusive care from faculty. This is not an environment that we should be letting them live in especially if they are your parents. If they lived there lives to watch you grow and take care of you we should be returning them the favor and taking care of them until their final days. The only exception that I have for not taking care of them would be if they have a serious disability or if they are mentally ill. There are illness where the son or daughter of the family member is not able to care for that person because of circumstances that out of their reach. When you are working in health and social care environment concerns might arise from specific incidents or emergencies. However, when you are working in residential care home there are lots of concerns that might arise as I have discussed in my P4 if a fire was to happen. So, one of the main concerns that might arise in a care home will be if there was a security codes taking place because theft might happen as everybody will be focusing on getting the residents of the care home out of the building. Curthbert and Quallington (2008) stated that care is an important personal skill and individual caring for residents need to use the right approach and by so doing will ensure respect and dignity for both side. Leaving in a residential home take away all the homely feeling as they cannot even decide what food to eat, clothes to wear and bring in personal belongings which can give them a feeling of comfort (Innes et al, 2011). Looking at the broad picture of residential homes most of them are like institute as there is not much choice to do any activities, type of food to eat or when to sleep or waking up (Ibid). Everything is done according to residential home’s policies. The intervention of family members is important as they are the only people who understand and know their relatives’ needs.

The character Dorothy said in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, “there is no place like home” (Baum, 1960, p. 45). Sadly, many of our elderly live in Long Term Care Facilities (LTCF). The transition from living in their own homes, to living in a LTCF, can be a traumatic experience. Poor adaptation to a LTCF may cause depression, malnutrition and significantly reduce the lifespan of the elder. Thus, it is imperative, that nurse’s recognize this promptly.

“There is some evidence that the quality of care for nursing home residents has improved, such as the decreased use of physical restraints and psychotropic medications, serious problems continue for many residents, especially those at the end of their lives.” Some of the issues have been corrected, not abusing or neglecting the elderly patients but the services are not handling the most important part of the patients’ lives. They are still having some issues with handling the patients that are at the end of their lives, they need to focus on the end of their lives in dealing with this they need to know how deal with this part with them and the families.

Although many families want to do what is best for their loved one, they may be required to make the decision to place them into a nursing home because it is too hard to care for them on their own.
