Fantasy:
Fantasy is a form of literary genre that cannot happen in the real world.
This genre usually involves magical places and imaginary creatures from another world or time not known to man today. Summerland by Michael Chabon is a fantasy because the book follows a baseball game that could save the world. Draw the Dark by Llsa J. Bick tells the story of a young boy that can see into other people’s minds. Bone Chiller by Graham McNamee is the story of a boy bitten by a demon.
There are different kinds of fantasy in this genre. Animal fantasy-Stories where animals talk and are an active part of the plot have been around for centuries. There are books written that include spiders that tell us what to do, dragons that talk and interact
Throughout the book, “The Western Place” , by Maxine Hong Kingston, there is a differential gap between the two sisters who come from two different sides of the world. A lot of differences between the two sisters and their personal lifestyles comes from one sister living in America as a Chinese-American and the other sister living in China. In the story Brave Orchid who is the sister that is brave, outspoken, and sometimes cruel sees life as a bundle of opportunities to take with no regret. However, it is different when her sister Moon Orchid comes into town from China because she is the complete opposite. Moon Orchid is rather humble, timid, and quiet while she observes the lifestyle of her sister and nieces and nephews.
America, United Stated of America (USA), is a land of immigrants. The country was built by immigrants but gradually immigration to this country became harder. Several contagious nations of American continents have lot of population living in poverty and were strongly convinced to immigrate to USA illegally, by travelling on foot for several days, crossing deserts, mountains and the southern border of USA, to get a decent and secured better life for them and for their kids. In the poem Summer Solstice, New York by Sharon Olds, we can identify from the title that author going to address something about long summer day because she used “Summer Solstice”. Moreover she put New York City next to it which is the busiest city in the United States. Olds started the poem by telling a story about, a man who is standing on top of the building and ready to commit suicide. As he standing on top of the building and looking down, he sees thousands of people walking, talking, and busy in their own world. Olds represent him as a person who is tired of his life, and duties. “By the end of the longest day of the year he could not stand it” (line 1). In next lines of poem author explains what cause him to commit suicide. May be because he thinks giving up with his life is easier instead of living in this world. But suicide is not always a solution to fix problems in world. The theme of this poem is prejudice, because author stated at first the man is committing suicide, but he didn’t commit suicide because police stops him and tell him the real beauty of this world.
Strawberries are treasured by numerous throughout the world, but feelings may transformation after the unveiling of some dark secrets of strawberry farms. “In the Strawberry Fields” by Eric Schlosser brings up many concerning realities about what life is truly like for strawberry pickers. Many of these farm workers are illegal migrants from Mexico. Because of their illegal status, they are far less probable to go to the authorities with complaints of unfair treatment. A Summer Life, by Gary Soto, is an autobiography depicting his childhood in Fresno, California. In chapter 22, “The Guardian Angel”, Gary begins to grow older and more aware of the world around him, and his guardian angel begins to fade. After years of getting scraped and bruised and never killed, the angel seemingly disappears in order to save an unluckier person. Furthermore, as his childish views of the world begin to change, so does he. The guardian angel gave him many gifts, such as a luckier childhood than his brother, a new knowledge of his life, and the strength to face and acknowledge his many fears.

A fantasy film commonly involves a fantastical, imaginative, fairy tale based world with elements of magic, supernatural, escapism, or myth. Two films that showcase each aspect of the fantasy genre are: Guilermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth and Henry Selick’s Coraline. Pan’s Labyrinth and Coraline, share universal fantasy tropes such as the fantasy world that exist in both films.
The book, That Summer, by Sarah Dessen is a great coming of age,enjoyable novel to read. Haven,who is fifteen,is going through many harsh changes in her life at the moment. Her parents are getting divorced and her dad is getting remarried and all Haven wants is for her life to be like it use to be. Haven’s so called “soulmate” named Sumner,who she dated last summer,is back at her school. Her dad gets married and Haven does not take it too well.She now realizes that it’s officially over. Many centuries after the first spaceship landed on the moon, a group of brave rocket men and women did the unbelievable. The short story “All summer is a day”, by Ray Bradbury, takes place in the underground city of the planet Venus where tunnels roamed instead of streets. The land above them was submerged with endless pouring rain and deadly jungles. The sight of the sun was a rare miracle that only happened once every seven years. The children spent all their life in the enclosed underground tunnels, well all except for one. Margot was the only child who came to Venus when she was four, and the biggest difference was that she still remembered the times when the glowing sun gave warmth and hope.
¨All Summer in a Day¨, a story by Ray Bradbury introduces the reader to the life on Venus. Margot a girl from earth has moved to Venus. Everyday, Margot lives in a world of rain. Only every seven years, the sun shines its bright rays only for an hour. She always remembers the warmth and beautiful rays the sun produces but, it only rains in her world.
“Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, “My Father as a Guitar” by Martin Espada, and “Digging” by Seamus Heaney are three poems that look into the past of the authors and dig up memories of the authors fathers. The poems contain similar conflicts, settings, and themes that are essential in helping the reader understand the heartfelt feelings the authors have for their fathers. With the authors of the three poems all living the gust of their life in the 1900’s, their biographical will be similar and easier to connect with each other.

The word “genre” is defined as a category of artistic composition, whether that art be painting, music, or literature. Genres are always defined by an origin point, the first and most essential example of its kind. In the case of literature, these are known as classical books. Novels and stories that are responsible for developing or popularizing a certain style, or theme. An easy example of a classical book responsible for creating genres could be The Hobbit. A fantasy novel written by J.R.R. Tolkien to entertain his children and keep track of the bedtime stories he continuously told them. Tolkien’s wonderous stories bore a new era of creation, seeing the continuation of the story in Lord of the Rings, and becoming the basis for modern fantasy
Literature is defined as written works published on a particular subject. Literature can also be viewed as witness, because it can be a source of proof based on the events it was written on. Literature as witness allows readers to get a deeper understanding of the issues that have happened based off of what the books are about. Those who read literary texts such as historical novels, memoirs and novels are witness to historical events. These texts can be viewed as witness because the events mentioned are based off of true life events. Some may argue historical fiction is not real and therefore could not be viewed as a reliable source.
