Daily Fantasy Sports have become very popular and at least in the near future, I think this popularity will continue to increase. As more and more fantasy owners enter this spectrum, simply looking at basic statistics will no longer suffice if you are looking to get the edge over the general public. Season long fantasy football is a great example as everyone has a basic understanding of what to look for and how to use that information. With baseball in general being driven by advanced statistics, it only makes sense to pick up on these different methods of evaluating players and how to incorporate them into your daily fantasy baseball research.
There is not one specific statistic that a user can point to that overrules all of the other statistics, but we can trust advanced statistics because baseball is so binary in nature. The basic

Using split statistics can help you become a better daily fantasy sports player and in turn, a more profitable one.
In an ideal situation, you should target hitters and pitchers that have as many splits in their favor. Keep in mind that it is extremely important to not infer too much from a small sample size as variance becomes introduced and if you haven’t figured out what variance is yet in your game play, you will soon and it is your enemy. Using left-handed/right-handed splits are the best place to start your research. But be careful not to rely solely on this statistic alone. Ryan Raburn is a fantastic example. Typically Raburn garners a positive lineup spot when the Indians face a left-handed pitcher and he
Below is a table and scatter plot displaying David Ortiz’s home runs earned during the past five years with the Boston Red Sox. The data collected is based off of David Ortiz’s home runs earned over the course of that correlating baseball season. The table organizes data into the amount of times David Ortiz was at bat, the amount of earned home runs, as well as the percentage of hits that resulted in home runs. In addition to the table, summary statistics were created to show the mean, variance, standard deviation as well as median of earned home runs. These values show that David Ortiz has been consistent with home runs earned with little variance.
This first chart provides an excellent summary of his performance this season (stats downloaded from ESPN Stats and Information and accurate as of 8/2). Paredes has had limited exposure to left-handed pitchers and has mostly struggled against them with only a .583 OPS in 53 PAs. He received 22 PAs against left-handed pitching in May and put up an .182/.182/.227 line with a 31.8 K% and no walks. He’s only received 26 PAs against left-handed pitching since May and therefore isn’t used much against left-handed pitching. This indicates that he is nothing more than a platoon DH bat against solely
Baseball statistics are meant to be a representation of a player’s talent. Since baseball’s inception around the mid-19th century, statistics have been used to interpret the talent level of any given player, however, the statistics that have been traditionally used to define talent are often times misleading. At a fundamental level, baseball, like any game, is about winning. To win games, teams have to score runs; to score runs, players have to get on base any way they can. All the while, the pitcher and the defense are supposed to prevent runs from scoring. As simplistic as this view sounds, the statistics being used to evaluate individual players were extremely flawed. In an attempt to develop more
If you are someone who is just getting started playing daily fantasy baseball on FanDuel and you’ve a season-long fantasy baseball player, there are few similarities that will look familiar and help you make an easy transition. Let’s start by talking about what you need to do to get your daily fantasy lineups started on the right foot.
Billy Beane’s field of expertise is called sabermetrics. Sabermetrics is the analysis of baseball through objective evidence, especially baseball statistics that measure in-game activity rather than industry activity such as attendance. The term is derived from the acronym SABR, which stands for the Society for American Baseball Research. It was coined by Bill James, who was one of its pioneers and
Attention Getter- Ironically, Billy Beane is a prime example of why using his strategy is such a good idea. B. Thesis- Billy Beane changed the way of the sport of baseball and in doing so changed the technique of business recruitment through the use of sabermetrics. C. Preview-
Batting average was the norm adopted by other baseball teams. But training for Oakland was focused on the player’s ability to obtain on-base scoring. The team relied more on selecting players by their on-base percentages. According to Sabermetrics model, teams always win with players having attained high on-base percentages.
Then throughout the time of year, you will set your draft based on how well you think "your" participant will perform. The statistics your players generate in their real games are collected, and fantasy points are awarded based
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect that some baseball statistics and player attributes have on producing the largest “offensive wins above replacement.” This statistic, also known as “oWAR,” is becoming increasingly more popular in Major League Baseball and is designed to summarize all of player’s contributions to their team, in one number. We selected to study oWAR because it is one of the best offensive statistics nowadays for predicting team success. In addition, WAR statistics are estimations and do not have a specific formula, therefore we are interested in uncovering more about which factors lead to players contributing more wins to their team. Because baseball and “Seasonal WAR” (total WAR) have three different elements,
Statistics, specifically how they measure and control data, as well as help us learn from it, has and always will be a part of baseball (“What is statistics”). Stats are very, very useful for many purposes in the sport, and can help keep some analysis simplistic. The most effective use of stats in baseball is the comparison between teammates within the same season. Within these parameters, the numbers come from very similar environments, as the teammates are playing against the same teams in the same ballparks at the same time. There are no outside factors potentially skewing the
For each outfielder in these years, Baseball Savant tells the users the number of opportunities in each of these five categories that an outfielder had and how many times he converted an opportunity. Using this data for each outfielder with at least 50 opportunities, it’s possible to determine the league average in a category and how many catches above or below average an outfielder is presuming he faced an average difficulty of catch in each
The game of baseball has been argued to be the number one game in America and also around the world. Respectively the game is also known as “America’s pastime” had over 14 million people in the U.S. alone watching the World Series in 20151. Due to the growing popularity of baseball throughout the world the players of Major League Baseball (MLB) have become more diverse. Since 1950 when baseball started to grow in popularity the attendance per game has risen over 40%2.
Many baseball players like to know how well they bat; they usually look at their batting average difference between right-handed and left-handed pitchers.
and analyzing vast amounts of baseball data. Then came the boom in baseball players’ salaries: this dramatically
The book Moneyball by Michael Lewis is about a former major league baseball player who became the manager of the Oakland A’s. It tells the story of how he led the team to success despite their low budget by using computer based analytics to draft players. With the help of Bill James, the Oakland A’s came up with a new plan based on statistics to draft players. He went after players nobody wanted due to their low budget and his new plan. Billy led the Oakland Athletics to a successive win seasons by changing the way he measured players. He abandoned the traditional 5 “tool” the other scouts used and adopted empirical analytics. The abandonment of the traditional assessment of
