According to the author of this obituary, what aspects of Faraday’s life and work contributed to his reputation? How does the picture presented in the obituary compare to the picture presented in Book 1, Chapter 4?

There are two questions to answer for this TMA. To answer the first question one needs to know the definition of Reputation: the estimation in which a person or thing is generally held; opinion,(E. Dictionary, 2006). It is also necessary to know what in life and work contributed to his reputation. The second question, one needs to understand what it means to Compare: to regard or represent as analogues or similar; liken, (E.Dictionary, 2006). It is also necessary to examine and compare the two pictures.

The following statement would indicate faraday's reputation in popularity, 'Faraday's lectures were so popular that they had to have one way traffic near Albemarle street,' (Falconer, DVD, 2008). It is therefore a tempting thought that Faraday was an early pioneer in teaching methods and would not look out of place in schools and television today. However, chapter four comments about other lecturers' development of similar styles of teaching, or performing to entertain the audience, (Falconer,James, 2008). Therefore, one can only imagine that there was much competition and that Faraday was aware of that and would encourage him to find new ways to attract the audience, which in many ways is like a competition between television networks today. Dr Falconer, suggested in the DVD that Faraday had had elocution lessons it was a realisation that he must have been conscience of how he sounded to other lecturers and this was probable because of his poorer background and would prove his need to better his performance for his reputation, (Falconer, DVD, 2008).

The comparison between the passage in the assignment book and the picture portrayed in chapter four are of a very similar view of who and what Faraday was. These achieve the impression of the general public seeing Faraday, as a conjurer, or a
